My name is Lyane and his is Ti-Mousse. First forgive my English, I’m French Canadian and it is the 1st time ever I’m on a forum. I don’t know exactly what I’m doing and how it works; just hoping I’m posting OK at the right place!

My little minou needs all of your help! I promised him that I would make him a wonderful life when he knocked at my door 3 years ago (he’s 5), with part of one ear so frozen that bits and pieces were gone and the other one all curled up and still hard as rock, running on 3 feet for weeks (I thought he was crippled). He was RX on November 27, put on Caninsulin. I want to change him to Lantus now with your help. Thank you for being there.

Hi and welcome Lyane and Ti-Mousse. You are in the right place to learn more about feline diabetes and treatment to help kitty feel better. You have already made your signature, thanks very much. It's very helpful.
Are you home testing Lyane? It's very important that you home test Ti-Mousse so that you can see how the insulin is affecting him, and to keep him safe from hypos (low blood sugar) which can be very dangerous for Ti-Mousse. Especially since you may have recently changed his diet to all low carb, which can significantly lower the BG (blood glucose). I suggest that you return to the Home page, and read the "Getting Started" and the "Education" sections to the right of the page. This is all very good foundation information that you need starting out.
We can help with home testing and helping you set up the spreadsheet where we record all the insulin injection and BG testing data. The spreadsheet shows us graphically how the insulin is working, and if changes might be needed.
Please post in our Main Health forum, so that more members can get to know you and Ti-Mousse, and begin helping you learn more about the next steps you should take.
Please allow us to help you as you begin this new venture and getting Ti-Mousse to optimal health. (I hope the French translation makes sense!)

I'm crying right now...I'm so happy someone is there for us; no one was responding, I thought I had not posted right; I am not familiar with those boards. I'm OK with searching but posting is new for me, I'll get use to it. I'm so thankful to you, it brings life to us! By the way, translation is great; I mentioned French Canadian in case I make mistakes in writing, but I understand everything. (I'll remove this from my profile signature so members won't be stopped because of it). My Ti-Mousse has not had insulin since 5 days as per vet's instructions, I'm worried and got Lantus this afternoon with 0.3 syringes. As you suggested, I will post (hopefully OK) in the Main Health forum and also in the Lantus one to get advice on the switch for dosage confirmation vs my vet's prescription and the way-to-go TR or SLGS. I need to get him back asap on insulin.
I'm starting home testing and as per suggestions I made him a rice sock, he hardly has veins in his ears because they were frozen to death when we found him!! Spreadsheet not done yet as I did not have much to enter but I will.
Thank you so much again, you made our day:bighug: I'll have a good night sleep tonight finally with my little Ti-Mousse purring on my pillow; we're not alone anymore!!

My dear, you are definitely NOT alone. We were all scared and felt overwhelmed at the beginning. Please don't cry, it makes your eyes swell up and your nose drip! :D One step at a time, and you will learn like the rest of us. You will learn how to navigate the forums in no time, just look around to your heart's content. Read some of the posts here in this Welcome forum, and see that you are not the only one seeking help and feeling unsure.
I am so very glad that you will be home testing, that's one sure step in the right direction. If you can't test on his ears, perhaps paw pad testing would be an option. Here is a link to the Main Health forum: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/feline-health-the-main-forum.28/
Yes, please visit the Lantus forum, and read the information about the insulin there. You will meet wonderful, kind, knowledgeable and and experienced people there that will advise you. I know because they helped me. I will be looking in and watching your progress. Bon chance!!! (I remember this from my high school French a century ago!)

Thanks for the link to the Main Health and for the paw pad testing option; it's good to have workarounds. When you say I'll meet wonderful people, you were right, I already did last night when you welcomed me! I posted on the Lantus forum to get help for the dosage. I'll keep you posted. Merci for your Bon Chance !!

Welcome to you and Ti-Mousse from another Canadian! You are definitely not alone. You have found a warm welcoming community to not only help Ti-Mousse but also support you while you learn about dealing with his diabetes. It can be overwhelming at first but I guarantee you this will all become routine in a few weeks. You've already taken the first step in keeping Ti-Mousse safe and getting him regulated by home testing. That often tends to be the hardest skill for folks to learn and you've obviously been doing your research so you are well on your way. :)

Thanks for your warm welcome! You're right, it is overwhelming right now, so much to learn, but I'll get there because I'm not alone anymore. Testing is the worst part, I can hardly believe that all this will become a routine, but if you say so, I believe you :)

Thanks Kerri. It feels so good to have so many nice people around. I see that Coco is having Merrick duck or turkey pate like my Ti-Mousse; he likes that too but prefers herring. Did you go with SLGS or TR?

I went with SLGS. It took me awhile to realize I needed to home test and get the hang of it. Coco went into remission after switching to Merrick's pate, but I still watch her closely and test periodically. Coco is very picky about her food - we've tried all sorts of brands, but she likes Merrick's best.

I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home. Maybe it will help you be more comfort with testing

It is an adventure, Lyane. Maybe not one you ever planned on, but this community is full of wonderful people, with varied life experiences, rich humor, and caring hearts. The stupid diabetes not withstanding (which we could all do without) I am so glad I am here and know these people.

Hi Janet, what an encouraging video and what a good timing ! Thanks so much for sharing; I'am planning on starting SLGS Saturday with all the testing it involves. He was diagnosed in November and my vet never told me I had to test :-( I'll think of you when I start Saturday and hopefully it'll be as easy for me as it seems to be for you:)

Hi Lou, for sure I was not planning on that like anyone of us; specially that I lost my 16 y.o. kitty with CKF in May after many months of giving treatments and subQs; on top, I have my little 12 y.o. that might have melanome of one eye; waiting for the ophtalmologist in January - might have to remove the eye... - and now my young Ti-Mousse 5 y.o. with diabetes... It's not a good year for me, but it'll be better next year, can't wait ! I agree with you; so many wonderful different people working together, sharing, caring and being there! Never give up, that's all it takes to win the battle!

Even having worked in the medical field, this terrified me at first. I learned and became comfortable with it pretty quick, with the help of the people here, though. After a while, it was like brushing my teeth. It was just a thing we did every day. When we started out, we had to put Frank in a kitty burrito to test. Within a week, he knew when it was time to test and jumped up in his chair and stood still for it. And he was a hard case because he had FIV and was pretty old and sick when he came to us. There is a learning curve, but we got the hang of it pretty quick.

We foster and usually end up with a handful who never get adopted. I swear they are all healthy and happy for years, then it seems everyone wants to get sick at once. Two years ago, it was heart failure, chronic renal failure, and cancer. This year we've had rare mouth diseases in two cats, a surprise round of FIP in foster kittens, and now Boozle's diabetes. Sometimes you don't get to be the driver so all you can do is control what you can and give the rest to the universe.

Yes Tina, you said it right: we're not the driver! When we think we are and something wrong happens, we feel so guilty. "Control what you can" and "testing is like brushing my teeth" - I'll remember that!
By the way, your little ones are really lucky to have you!

Welcome! I just had to say I have tears reading how hurt your kitty was when you found him, poor thing. He is lucky to have you to take good care of him after having such a hard start in life. Your English is fine, by the way. I am new here too, I think it will be a great resource. All the best to you and Ti-Mousse!

Hello Julie and welcome to this wonderful community. You wouldn't believe how much help, tips and encouragement I got! I switched Ti-Mousse from Caninsulin to Lantus; he had his 1st shot this morning; his numbers are very high but we'll get there. I'm trying SLGS! Happy you're with us and good luck to your little Honey!
