This week I received the new NovaMaxPlus monitor to keep better track of Payne's ketones.
The manual says to ONLY use blood from a finger .... I called the company and they said since
no studies have been done on animals AND since the normal ranges for humans and animals
are different, they could not guarantee the accuracy on a cat. (thanks a lot!)

We have decided to run a normal for Payne (strips are REALLY expensive!) when she is feeling
well and then we should be able to tell when they go up?? Does this make sense? Now we are
testing her ketones with the urine strips but wanted a way of testing before she teeters in
the DKA area. She has been hospitalized 3X in 6 wks. for DKA and we almost lost her the last
time.

Although 2 wks. ago her ketones shot up and because we are testing her BG's and ketones a
lot! we were able to catch it right in the beginning and gave her SubQ's and 1 u Novolin,
which kept her out of the hospital.

Anyone use a ketone monitor? Awhile back someone said they did but because I am in way over
my head it seems, I can't remember, sorry. Thanks in advance!

I would think that testing anywhere is still valid, they have to specify fingertip if that is the only place used during their trials or whatever.

The meter I see used here for testing for blood ketones is the precision extra

I hope this meter helps you guys!

I think it will be alot cheaper for you if you just pick up ketostix from any pharmacy and test urine for ketones.
You are right that those strips are SUPER expensive, so why not get a regular monitor like Relion to do BG testing and the strips are very cheap I hear. It's not available in Canada so I prefer to use the Bayer Contour and any of the OneTouch meters.
I do have a Precision Xtra meter to test BG and ketones, but the strips cost just about 10 times the price of other strips.

Have you looked on Ebay for the strips? Agree that Ketostix work well, but if I had a ketone prone kitty, it would be nice to have these around in an emergency, when the cat just won't pee on command.
