Reasons for needing to go back on insulin

Hi

Splodge has been OTJ for about 10 or so months. A few weeks ago I checked his BGL and the reading was high. I took him to the vets to check for infection etc, but his temp was lower than normal and although his teeth have a build up of tartar, there's no infection. There's also no UTI. The vet has put him on Antirobe & Synulox as a precaution.

What other reasons could there be for him suddenly needing insulin again? He's not at all stressed.

His BGL's are higher atm than they have ever been! One reading was so high, the meter couldnt measure it! :o

Nope, no chance he's got into high carb food.

His levels seem to have got higher while on the antibiotics.

He also had some kind of allergy dermatitis on his back (maybe flea) for the past few weeks, but this has almost gone now.
 
If there is no definite problem that requires antibiotics, can he go off them?

Do you have any insulin left? You could give him just a bit - like under .5 units - to see how he reacts, if he stays in the high ranges.
 
Just a thought.
Allergy is an immune response and generates inflammation (which is why vets often give a steroid). Perhaps there is more inflammation in thewhole body as a result. Or perhaps some of the allergen is ingested, not breathed, and it is affecting the GI tract.
 
Sue he's been back on insulin for over a week now! I started him on 1 unit, but his nadirs were really low, so I dropped it to 0.5 and his levels went sky high. He's now on 1 unit and I think its going to need to be increased again.

BJM, possible I suppose. The allergy on his back is almost gone now, so lets see if that makes a difference to his bgl.
 
Can you eyeball between .5 and one? Might be the "ideal" dose?

Don't need to tell you to keep a close eye on the numbers. When you aren't sure what is causing them, they can surprise you!
