Reasons for difficult urination??

Last night was the second time Shiloh had problems starting to urinate. The other time was at the vets 2 months ago. He had a catheter in for a few days, on pills for a month, and treated for a UTI. Everything was fine with his stream until last night. Poor baby could only piddle small amts. I know he usually goes when I put him in the carrier, from nerves, so twice I was able to have him go some. (sorry, Shiloh, mommy had to do that!)

I also had some pills left over, and gave him one. I was up all night worrying. (roads may have been slippery and vet is a half hour away, or I would have driven him.) Finally at 4am he went into the box and peed a good amt. I called the vet this morning, and as I was talking to the receptionist, he went in the box and peed more, good stream and amt. I'll call and talk to the vet tomorrow.

His last urine culture 2 weeks ago was normal. What could be causing this? Donna

Oh, one thing more. He is having some back trouble. The vet did an Xray which showed a vertebrae off a little a few up from the bottom. Could the nerve to his bladder be pinched? He does seem to hurt from this. He doesn't crouch down to use the box, and walks stiffly. Donna

My first thought was a UTI. or blockage from urine crystals. The dose of antibiotics you gave may have given some temporary relief. Once a cat gets a UTI it tends to reoccur. When he did urnate was there any blood in the urine? This might ubfortunately involve having to get a urine sample to the vet.

I had a cat who had difficulty scooting down to urinate as he got older.I got him a box with a high back and he stood up to urinate and defecate. I also had his rear end shaved since he was long haired and had difficulty grooming himself back there. He lived to be twenty but the litter box was a messy ordeal the last two years of his life due to his arthritis.
