I've realized the older OneTouch Ultra glucometer we have been given is no longer being made and so I can't find the appropriate test strips in Canada (they're on Amazon U.S. but the shipping alone is about $55.) Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced machine that also has reasonably priced test strips that will be easy to find? Wondering if I should stick to Amazon as well or check out Walmart or a medical supply store.

I moved from the Accu-Chek to the Bravo Meter. It's the cheapest in Canada (as far as I know), but you have to order it and all the strips online. Many people here use it and I found it as a result of this site.

It's 40 dollars for 100 strips and you do get a free meter with your first 100 strip purchase.

Thank you so much, what a difference in prices! And I see they actually do have the test strips I was looking for but they're twice as much as the Bravo test strips. I never would have found this site, thank you for your quick reply!

No problem. Happy to be of use and really I'm just passing on some of the knowledge that people were kind enough to share with me. It's ridiculous how expensive the equipment is here.

Truly ridiculous, I couldn't believe the prices of the test strips. So relieved to have found this forum.

Me too. Definitely ask as many questions as you have. Everyone here is an invaluable source of information that I would not have been able to find anywhere else.

If you go with the Bravo meter (the strips need a fairly large drop of blood), please order 300-400 strips at a time and reorder when you get down to 200 strips. Like your current meter, in a crisis situation you won't be able to run out to a drug store to pick up more.

It works out best if you order a whole whack of strips to get free shipping. I keep my other meter just in case I need to get strips locally although I think it is being discontinued.

For me the Bravo (thankfully) required slightly less blood than my other meter. I think someone put up a comparison chart when I first joined. I will see if I can find it.

Some extra info:
  • Accu-chek Aviva Nano meter you are using requires 0.6 microlitres of blood
  • Bravo Meter requires 0.5 microlitres $39.99/100 = $0.40/test (DiabetesExpress)
  • FreeStyle Lite requires 0.3 microlitres $74.99/100 = $0.75/test (London Drugs)
  • AlphaTrak 2 meter 0.3 microlitres $88.59/50 = $1.77/test (eBay)
The FreeStyle lite and AlphaTrak meters are special because if they don't get enough blood initially, then you get up to 60 seconds to add more blood. The AlphaTrak is calibrated for pet blood, so its numbers will differ from the human glucometers (the rest in the list). So you will need to use a special spreadsheet for the pet one if you decide to use it and will need to follow different numbers in the dosing protocol. Just thought I would mention that because you noted you had an AlphaTrak as well!
