Really bad and very smelly diarrhea

Kirby was diagnosed 9 days ago and he seems to be doing well. I've been in a constant fight with my parents because he is their cat but I refuse to return him because I don't trust that they will take care of him (especially since he was skin and bones when I brought him to the vet because they wouldn't bring him).

Kirby weighed 9.5 pounds at the vet, was very dehydrated, and you could see his spine and his ribs very easily. I had trouble petting him because it both grossed me out and made me very upset. I would pet him anyway because he loves attention. He seems to be gaining weight though which I am very happy about and his skin bounces back so he doesn't seem to be as dehydrated.

The only problem is that he has really bad diarrhea. It's worse too because he is notorious for not burying his business. I've been cleaning the litter boxes sometimes twice a day just keep the smell away. My parents were feeding him 9 Lives wet food, but I've been feeding him the Royal Canin Glycobalance from the vet and either Fancy Feast or Friskies wet food because that is what I give two of my cats.

At what point should I start worrying that this isn't from a diet change? I have a vet appointment for him next week to see how he is doing, so I'll definitely bring it up then, but should I be doing something different?

On a side note, it's kind of hilarious how huge Kirby is compared to my 3 cats. Remy is 3 years old and only weighs about 8 pounds but he's definitely not underweight and Kirby looks like a giant next to him. Another good thing too is that Kirby has been very interested in playing with my kitten, Flora. My parents have another cat who is 17 and really just sleeps all day and their jerk of a dog eats any cat toys I bring over, so I feel like it's one of the first times Kirby has been able to have fun.

Hi Alyssa, very glad you're stepping up for Kirby!

Is it possible Kirby had pancreatitis? I did not know that's what happened to my girl until much later, but we were experiencing icky green diarrhea for a couple months which was apparently from a pancreatitis flare up she didn't get treated for (looking back I'm amazed she survived).

9 Lives wet (the Meaty Pate) is actually fine for diabetics ... so is Friskies Pate or Fancy Feast Classics. Once you are home-testing, I would switch him to one of those, they are more appropriate for diabetics, but you must be careful because it will lower his insulin needs and you need to make sure you don't overdose him during the switch.

My girl felt like a bag of bones too. She was longhaired so you couldn't tell just by looking at her but it was very icky picking her up!

Good for you helping get him healthy! Get rid of the glyco balance. It's too high in carb. Ff is great, just make sure it's not the gravy food. Fancy feast classic is what you want. For the diarrhea, try adding a teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin. You can also add FortiFlora on the food (amazon and chewy carry it).

You're going to want to start home testing. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home.
