I was on the board once before when my cat, Cane was diagnosed with FD. I want to start home testing him and I plan on switching all of four of my cats over over to a wet food instead of the current dry food. We have a human BG test meter at the home and everything I see here shows that it can be used instead of the $150 feline test meter the vet wants me to buy. I am concerned that Cane is starting to walk funny and he might have neuropathy. I am scheduling him a vet visit to see what we can do to help correct this. I am going to spend a bit more time on the site to gleem more tidbits of info.

Yes, you can use the human meter.

Also, Methyl B-12 is used by a lot of people to treat neuropathy. Many have had very positive results with it.

Banefield Pet Hospital in Knightdale. The one in Raleigh was horrible so I had to switch in order to get away from the Ralrigh Banefield. The doctors in Knightdale are more receptive.
 
There is a GREAT vet in Rolesville. I am not sure the name of the hospital, but I know the name of the vet.

Which insulin are you using?

I can't help you with the neuropathy issues, but it sounds like you are connecting with kse for some local help.

Welcome back. The hometesting will definitely help you get the FD under control. Also, get some Methyl B12 and start giving it daily. When I adopted Spot, she had severe neuropathy. Within a few weeks of being on insulin and methyl b12, I saw significant improvement. She could barely walk when I adopted her and in less than a couple months she was jumping on all of the furniture. :mrgreen:

You can use any brand meter including store brands such as Walmart Relion meters. If you decide on the Relion meters I recommend either the Confirm or Micro since they require less blood.

Can you tell us what insulin you are using and what dose? That will help us with our suggestions.
