Reading discrepancies - Alphatrak 2 vs Freestyle Libre

Hi,

My kitty Simon has had high BG readings per the Alphatrak 2 for a while, averaging around 200.

He is not on insulin at this time.

So his internist placed a Freestyle Libre yesterday, so we could get an idea of what is going on with him.

Today, I got a BG reading of 111 with the Freestyle Libre, but, at the same time, of 194 from the Alphatrak.

I know the Freestyle Libre can underreport readings, but this is such a large discrepancy! How do I know which reading is the most accurate?

Thanks!

Kat

Update: I read about the delay with the Freestyle Libre, so I rechecked with it about 30mins after getting the 194 on the Alphatrak. This time it read 154. Less of a difference, but still fairly significant. So I still wonder which method is the most accurate.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thank you so much!

Kat

I know the libre is a human meter and alphatrack is a pet meter so that should explain the discrepancy. Also there’s always a 10-15% variance between meters that is acceptable

If you’re going to stick with the libre, I’d suggest getting a human meter and keeping the alphatrack as a backup. Mixing human and pet readings will drive you crazy

Hi Kat,

There's no way of directly comparing Alphatrak readings to those taken using devices calibrated for use on humans. (Many here have tried and not really got anywhere.) As Ale recommends above, choose a device and stick with it.

Alphatrak meters read higher than human meters, and the higher the 'actual' BG level, the greater the difference there will be between the readings.

I've not used a Libre but my understanding from what I've seen in posts here is that they measure interstitial BG level and that there can be a difference between readings taken from the Libre and those made using a human blood glucose meter, but I think the differences should not be as great as those observed between readings taken from a human blood meter and an Alphatrak. (I think @Larry and Kitties has used a Libre and he might be able to offer a better explanation.)

Alphatrak will be the same as your vets readings (which is why I use it) but either will tell you if he's too high or too low.
