OTJ cat, fed only seafood Friskies- low carb, Having chin acne for at least 6 wks, did go to vet & given cream to put on acne, bowls are not plastic. No change in litter or cleaning etc in house. New carpeting in house recently. cat hangs out under the bed on the carpeting.

about a week ago cat was given an injection of an antibiotic. One week later the cat had 2 absecess show up on the neck. One of which burst.

Vet tested for F Leukemia as well as other tests. The owner was told it is possible the chin infection spread, could be a form of strep? owner did have strep.

I nearly went crazy when 2 high carb foods were recommended by her vet - I immediately sent her Binky's list- oh course owner believed vet first & not the list or me- but I won't give up since there is a bigger problem lurking here if a HC is fed. I offered to give her a BG meter- so far hasn't agreed to test at home. New food was recommended at the clinic since owner believes the cat is showing allergy to the food since cat never had this issue before eating the seafood friskies. I recommended keeping the cat out of the bedroom and see what happens. Switch the cat to EVO, Fancy Feast or any other low carb listed on Binky's list (I gave her the list) that is no grain no seafood.

thoughts?

have to make one change at a time to find the cause so yes, keeping cat out of bedroom to rule out carpet is a go as far as i'm concerned. and obviously switching foods is too but not sure if they should do both things at the same time. ???

fwiw, Mousie just got over a case of chin acne here recently and what i did, per a wonderful vet tech who used to frequent here, was not only change from plastic cat bowl but i changed completely from bowl to plate because come to find out, their chin rubs all over the food soiled sides of a bowl when eating (i had a duh moment when this was pointed out to me. ), anddddddddd, she had me use stridex on her chin as much as possible. i shot for at least twice a day, morning and night after meals, but have to admit there were a few times i only got it done once because Mousie didn't like the stridex pads  think teenager with acne basically. the cleaner the surface can be kept the better. it did take several weeks for it to clear up too.

if this person went from dry to wet food shortly before all this started, simply going to a plate and cleaning kitty's face for a while might clear it up

what antibiotic was injected? and why was it injected and not given in liquid or pill form, do you know?

long acting antibiotic that lasts 2 wks- I'll find out the name.

Now the other cat is showing chin acne .. finally owners have blocked of room with new carpeting, admitted to changing laundry soap, will switch bowls to plates. I recommended bringing in a brand new litter box & making sure the litter is at least 4" deep. Just to get rid of any known bacteria sources.

Also the owner is following the vet's recommendation: warm compresses on the open sores then this creme the vet gave her. Cat has a cone on head to stop scratching the sores. Owner was so frustrated - had considered ..... yeah -- I thought Really?? I recommended to hold tight things will get better- get back to the simple things- rid the house of any allergens/bacteria-- work from the outside- let the vet work from the inside out. In time the cats will get better.

So frustrates me people can think cats are so disposable.
