Re-Using Lancets and Syringes??? Eyes please.

Hello all,

I came across a post this morning in which a person advised a newbie that it was safe and perfectly fine to "re-use lancets until they are too blunt" and to "re-use syringes if they were sterilized with alcohol."

I've always thought re-using lancets and syringes is strongly discouraged. I've said as much to this person, but I'd love to be able to give more feedback.

It is most certainly a bad idea to re-use either. I was told it was safe by a vet tech. And that's certainly not true. I don't have a picture to show up close what they look like, but after first use they become dull and painful.
 
Thanks for responding! I've already found two other threads with the inages of re-used syringes, here on the Health forum. Thank goodness for the wealth of information here on FDMB!

I have advised the person that re-using supplies is *not* recommended and linked the two threads explaining why. I hope the person reads and accepts this information.

Aside from the very real fact that they will HURT, there's one other good reason not to re-use syringes : a used syringe can contaminate the whole vial of insulin. There's a reason we put a sterile needle into that vial, and even if you wipe it with alcohol, there could be contaminants inside the needle. The cost of new syringes is miniscule compared to having to toss a vial of insulin!
 
Cost of:
100 Walmart syringes $13.00 (0.13 cents)
Vial of insulin $150.00 +
Insulin pens $230.00

Cost if you contaminate the insulin by reusing syringes.........hmmmm you figure it out.

Show it to your friend this way and see if they get it.....Is it really worth the money, when a syringe is 13 cents?
