Hello I'm Paula and I've been umm drafted to assist with a rescue cat that is presumed diabetic. Short version of what I know at this point is: His name is Sebby (short for Sebastian) and is adult male about 5 if I read the info right, presumed diabetic and being given prozinc 2u 2xday for about one month. He was owner surrendered to rescue he was adopted from yesterday with severe UTI. He saw the ER vet yesterday and is already receiving treatment at rescue for UTI. BG #'s off the chart at the vet. I plan to talk to the rescue's director by phone at lunch today. There was some talk at the ER vet about moving him to Lantus, which I suppose is good, except everybody is looking at ME as an expert and I know next to nothing about Lantus. The ER vet wanted him on Friskies Pate classics, and I think she said she gave him Fancy Feast yesterday since that's what they had on hand, so I think we're OK there. I'll get the "Binky's List" printed today (geez I just tossed the one I printed last year a few weeks ago).

For the benefit of anyone who remembers my id, when I was here last it was as "Nannersfriend" and I was fostering Nanner. Nanner was on prozinc until he went to his furever home. My own cat Flash (GA), was on Humulin (don't remember which one) for a few months until we changed his diet and he went OTJ, and then briefly after 5+ years OTJ, on Vetsulin for a couple of months before he went to the Bridge.

Basically my question at this point is "Is it possible to use Lantus without testing several times a day?". I plan to do everything I possibly can to get the rescue director to home test him, she has no problems giving injections and I've got a full testing kit to give her, and am able to continue to provide those supplies, so it won't be an expense for the rescue. I know enough that I am very aware that Lantus is most successful with frequent testing so please, go easy on us. We are trying our best to save Sebby. I am not in a position right now to foster this guy like we did with Nanner.

Thank you,

Paula

The answer to your question is Yes. Actually Lantus & Levemir are milder insulins that are designed to work in 12 hour cycles. However with Lantus it is best to "start low and go slow" because it does take some time to build up a reservoir or shed in the system. Generally a cat should be started on either .5 unit or 1 unit - give it a week, do a curve to see how the cat is reacting to the insulin and if blood sugar numbers warrant it go up from there. Once the kitty is regulated Lantus is just like any other insulin - test twice a day before each shot and then do a curve every two to three months. I hope the kitty gets to feeling better soon and finds a furever home!!! Jan
