Raw food question

Hey L & L ~

I gave Bubba 1 oz of raw beef for the first time. Thought he was getting tired of poultry. He liked it and with 15 -20 minutes he made a guttural cry and threw it all up. There was some grass in the throw up that he had eaten at least 5.5 hours earlier when he was outside.

I gave him another oz as he acted hungry still hanging out near the cat buffet. He would not eat the beef again but when I switched it for chicken, he ate mostly the whole oz. Maybe aversion from getting sick?

Could the beef upset his system that quickly or does it sound like something else like a brewing hairball since he ate grass? He has only had beef a couple of times and it was canned beef not raw.

Thoughts?

Poor Bubba!
I have no answer Bobbie , sorry, but sending healing :bighug::bighug::bighug:.

i read @Dr.Lisa that beef was known allergen and I know that commercial, non organic beef is extremely high in growth hormones, antibiotics and phosphorous. Plus, if from grocery store - there is also bacteria to worry about. However, I would think that 15-20 min isn't long enough to absorb and react in this way...

Ducia threw up every time she eats grass on empty stomach...

I wish it turns one time thing/ no biggie

Thanks Tanya. The beef came from the butcher, no AB, growth hormones or anything added. I think 15-20 mins. seems too soon also. I will have to go on Dr. Lisa's site and read about beef; I thought I remembered something about beef but couldn't remember what it was.

Hi Bobbie! No personal experience but thinking since it happened so fast after eating it may have been something else brewing in his tummy, like a hairball, and he ate grass hoping to throw it up. Hope Bubba feels better and gives beef another chance ;)

Back when Keena was picky about the canned food, every time I would try to give him beef, he would take a few bites, walk away, and barf it all back up. It was always immediately.

I think I will try it again tomorrow night and if he eats it and throws it up again quickly it will seem that it is an issue for him.

Back when I tried to switch Osha to raw she would throw it all up within 15 min. It was weird because she tolerated it fine for a few weeks but then the vomit started happening.

Beef is one of the common allergens, along with fish and chicken, but of course ECID. Neko puked up the Weruva Steak Frites but was fine with raw beef - go figure! With my civie and his IBD allergies, it would take an hour or two before things came up.

When introducing a new protein, start with just a 1/2 tsp of it, then increase the amount each day. There are introductions for starting a new protein on the FoodFurLife website.

Turkey and duck are not good first choices for raw. Duck is rich and I've been told turkey should also wait until later.

What are the best choices to start with? We did raw duck first along with canned food for many months until I switched to all raw ground chicken and turkey. Until the beef today, we have not had a problem.

Taffy barfs beef. I figured too rich. Also too rich for him are venison, lamb, duck, and pork. But beef is instant regurgitation. He doesn't like turkey. We stick to organic chicken thighs, cornish hens, quails, and any other game type non-water birds I can get a hold of (like the pheasants on sale after Xmas). I was always of the mind to feed what they might go for "in the wild". Seems to be true for Taffy. I do want to try rodents/baby rodents and baby chicks, but have not done it yet.

I tend to agree with that and never fed with beef until one member said that beef had certain proteins they needed different than poultry. I did try giving him 1/2 tsp of beef mixed in his chicken tonight. So far so good. Tomorrow I will increase it and see how he does.

I don't want beef to a frequent serve to him rather just a break from chicken and turkey.

Bubba gets fresh killed rodents outside :rolleyes:

Lucky boy!!! Taffy is not trusted to be smart enough to go out, at least not where we currently live.

Of course, I am sure that Taffy would die "in the wild" as he is not much of a hunter. But, maybe instincts would kick in. I tend to think that he is some sort of spoiled Prince, reincarnated, however. Which is why he enjoyed the pheasant so well!

I want to order from this place. https://www.laynelabs.com/
They are in No Calif, so better than some other suppliers for us as far as shipping.
Oh, Taffy does not enjoy rabbit either, but my previous cat loved it. Have you tried?

Bubba gets fresh killed rabbit o_O o n 5.31, I saw him in the back with one hanging from his mouth......I went outside and tried to get it from him and what took place resembled a football game with the quarter back (Bubba) much faster. He eventually went under DH's huge landscaping truck and feasted on his prey...... much to my disappointment. Later that day, his BG was 114! Check out the SS. It was probably higher because it was much more than his usual meals of 1 oz 6X day.

Bobbie if you want to add red meat Is suggest organic new Zealand venison.I buy medallion and tenderloin Fritz loves it. U buy fresh or frozen and then portion size and freeze. I alternate between rabbit quail and the venison as the venison has no bone as the rabbit and quail have a bit if all the body parts and bones.

I can buy frozen ground venison from my butcher where I get his chicken and turkey. Good idea!

Some kitties love kangaroo, can't get much more novel than that. I called is a mouseupial. :p I can get frozen kangaroo and even camel at my local grocery.

Bobbie, I'm really enjoying following this thread ! With Wellness changing their phosphorous content I am about fed up with commercial food and ready to start homemade for all 3 of my boys :).

I don't know why I hadn't thought of it before this year, but another source for fresh ground meat could be your local Farmer's Market. We have 10 meat producing farms at out local Farmer's Market (open year 'round). I can get boneless, all natural, pastured, and grass-fed ground bison, beef, chicken, lamb, pork, ostrich, and turkey from the same farmers we buy meat from. Some of them offer ground whole prey for pets, but I try to limit phosphorus with aging cats so I prefer boneless. All I do is add water and EZ Complete Fur Cats, mix, and freeze in small portions. Easy, peasy!
