Are there folks who feed raw to their diabetic cat who leave out food in-between meals? I've been cautioned that if my cat becomes hypo I should always have out a food source. I feed raw and transitioned off dry years ago. My cat is 17 and not typical diabetic (developing disease due to diet/obesity). Leaving out food b/w meals seems to be going backwards....I know there's many who free-feed, but would love to hear from others who feed raw and how they feel about this.

Good question - I think I've seen that some people leave it sitting on an ice pack. I don't know if others leave it out frozen. I know that some do this with commercial cat food. I'm thinking of making my own food, so will be interested in others replies.

Just checking on this one again to see if any raw food feeders. My vet's recommending I leave food out when I'm gone and hate to leave out dry. Any other raw feeders leave any food out during day?? If so, what do you leave out?

I feed raw to my civies. If I know I'll be out all day, I'll leave them a little canned food in the timed feeder. Most companies do not recommend leaving thawed raw out at room temperature for more than a half hour or leaving frozen raw out to thaw. I don't think an ice pack will make much of a difference.

You could leave freeze dried raw out, though. You can put a piece or two into a timed feeder. Or just put some canned food into a timed feeder.

I feed raw food. I actually make my own. So, as I'm using chicken and we all know what can happen if left at room temperature for too long, I put an ice pack under the bowls (secure it in place) and leave it out all day/night.

I don't think an ice pack lasts for more than 8 hours or so? In warmer climates, an ice pack may last less even less if left out at room temperature. I also don't think that it will keep raw food at a cold enough temperature to prevent quick spoilage/bacteria growth  Just my thoughts on that

Personally I would leave some low carb canned food out for a raw-fed diabetic to eat if hungry. Canned food can be left in a timed feeder with no worries. No dry food, though, since we all know dry food is awful and it has a longer digestion rate than raw so that might cause an upset tummy.

I raw feed food I've made.

I leave out a small amount of still frozen food. It defrosts in a couple of hours.

Seems to work just fine.

Thanks for all the replies. With a timed feeder, the food may dethaw by certain point but I'm not sure my cats would eat it then and thinking it might go bad because it would end up being out longer or all day.

The switch here with diabetes is that the cat may need something as emergency but in general I'd always been told it's healthier to not leave food out and it helps them eat better closer to the shot which we want to my knowledge.

My second cat also complicates things as he can get diarrhea from food if not right food so if I leave something out it might help my diabetic cat in emergency but hurt my other cat in general. This is a tricky one...

I may try and see how long it takes raw to dethaw on ice pack...

Does anyone NOT leave food out?
