Hello , so I switched Chicamonkey to fancy feast classics three days ago.
She’s really hungry.
She literally screams at me each times I’m in the kitchen. I give her 2.5 cans per day at 90 calories each. She is 13 pounds.
Her bg is still very unregulated ranging from 250-500 . I have her on 0.5 units NPH right now. Yes I know how awful NPH is - I’m working on it trust me!

my question is , do I just feed her every time she cries ? If I it food in her bowl she chomps it! There’s NO GRAZING HAPPENING..... she’s like pac man!

all her other labs were fine ... all of them

thank you ♥️

Welcome. I just read your intro. I might know someone who has some Levimir that she could give you , depending on your location. It’s also a depot drug. Your cat is really hungry because of the uncontrolled diabetes. Is she overweight? Fancy feast doesn’t have a lot of calories and she needs to lose slowly. She might need more food that she’s getting and will become even hungrier when her bf drops. I’m glad all her labs are good.

If 13lbs is a good weight for her, you'd want to start at 260 calories per day, so that's closer to 3 cans of FF BUT, a diabetic cat can't utilize their food properly so she may need to eat 150% of the "average" calories. Also, you can add some water to the food which will help "fill her up" as well as help keep her well hydrated.

As long as she doesn't eat for the 2 hours immediately before shot times, if she's hungry, feed her.

Think of insulin like it's a key and on every cell in the body there's a lock. No matter how much food she eats, the glucose the cells need to survive can't get in without the right number of keys. The glucose is "locked out".

She's applied to DCIN....I'm hoping to get her some insulin soon so she can get off the NPH

Now that we have a little time, can we get you to go ahead and fill out your Signature? Just click on your sign on name at the top right and there's a drop down menu to choose "Signature" (you've been there at least once since your spreadsheet link is there). Add some basic information so we don't have to ask the same questions every time. We like to have:

Your name/Cat's name, age, sex, date of diagnosis, type of insulin, type of meter, type of food, any other health problems or meds? and then the link to your spreadsheet.

If you look below any of our comments, you'll see our Signatures

If she's hungry, feed her. To maintain 13 lbs she would need at least 3 cans. But unregulated she may need more. Id do a can in the morning, a half can at lunch, a can in the evening and half can before bed. If she's still hungry you could give a little more than half can at those in between times, even doing a full can at each feeding until she's more regulated. Great job testing!!

I think she’s a tad overweight. Thicker in the middle . I think 11 pounds would be ideal for her. I feel that the lower carb food and getting her bg under control will fix her weight in time. My vet was not too concerned with her weight, he thinks she’s pretty healthy aside from new dx diabetes
