hey all: does anyone have any answers for my over-active mind today?

1. vaccinations: my vet does not want to vaccinate Tom (just normal annual) because of his newly DX. he said not at this time.....and that since Tom was 9 he had plenty of built-up resistance anyway and not too worry. do you agree/disagree?

2. traveling: I am going to have to go on a weekend visit out of town to see my dad (REALLY REALLY REALLY DO NOT WANT TO....but I have to spend time with him and obviously miss him...plus DH is going nuts not going anywhere this summer) anyway.....Tom is going to go with. first time ever! thank goodness the drive is less than 3 hours and the house we will stay at is vacant. He does not travel well though...at least not to the vets...but I have to take him. Here is the question:

do I keep the same dose that Tom will be currently at during the travel w/end? do I back off a bit so I am not overly worried about him going too low while trying to enjoy family (not that I will be able to think about anything but the super stressed out cat)? Do I back off a few days before? or do you just keep it the same since you know the cat will be sky-high away from the comforts of home and the known. not too mention: perhaps he won't eat. he never eats while at the vets. obviously, if he doesn't eat, I won't give his shot...or do I at a reduced dose? I won't have internet there!! AHHHHHHH hear me scream?!!!! I am not too sure when we are going....I am just stressing now. and I haven't even planned on a date!! go figure.

I realize this question will be best answered a few days before departing to read his SS at the time

it is actually a good idea to go sooner rather than later given he is not anywhere near "greens" yet......agreed?

I already called Walgreens about if all Walgreens are "hooked up together" in their system just in case I need to refill his Lantus while away from my Walgreens with the prescription on file. They said yes. so that concern is over.

3. Leg weakness-Tom does not walk on his hocks. He does go up and down the basement stairs very well. but I notice that when he stops walking and pauses....he does slump....just slowly goes down a little in the back legs. I would like to stop any muscle wasting now before it gets worse. I realize the best medicine for this is .....insulin. but anything else I can do now? I know ....well, kinda know about....Methylcobalamin. is this prescription only? is this too "hard core" as a preventative? if not......how do I buy it?

4. food: why do most "higher quality" foods have veggies and fruits in them? example: I bought some NATURE'S VARIETY:

95% meat: well, I notice when I have to out on his plate all these hunks of greens...which are artichokes, cranberries, kale, broccoli, cabbage, tomato, pumpkin....well this stuff is super expensive, but super low carb and 11% protein.

Are supposed to feed veggies/fruits? I don't think so right? or is it not that big of a deal? this certainly would not be a daily meal

4b. fancy feast kitten has milk in it. does it cause any GI upsets with anyone? I am always worried to give to Tom because of that. I have never given him milk

5. Alcohol wipes: do you all wipe your insulin vial before each and every with-drawl? I always do but was wondering if this could actually cause harm to the rubber part on the vial...perhaps dry it out? I am using ReliOn Alcohol Swabs which are 70% alcohol

okay I think that is all for the night

thanks for any input~~~KELLY

Re: RANDOM QUESTIONS

If he's an indoor cat & you aren't out handling unvaccinated cats, holding off on vaccines is probably OK.

When you travel, you monitor your cat like any other day and adjust the insulin following the protocol. It may reduce stress to leave the carrier out all the time and to practice for the trip.

Methylcobalamin is a form of Vit B12 and available over the counter. You want one with no sugars in it.

"Higher quality food" is marketing to humans that don't know better. There's a terrific food list at Cat Info. Select any with 10% calories from carbohydrates of less.

Milk - if cooked, the proteins have been somewhat denatured (changes the structure through heat). May or may not bother the cat. Mine never had a problem with it.

I never wiped the rubber stoppers, that I recall. I always used a fresh syringe.

Re: RANDOM QUESTIONS

Hi Kelly:) I found methylcobalamin at my local health food store with no sugar. Also make sure it doesn't have xylitol in it as that is toxic to cats:( There is also a cat version called zobaline that you can order online. I give the methylcobalamin in a small piece of a pill pocket (the duck/pea one is low carb but you have to get the dog one since the cat one is discontinued, it's the same thing though) to my kitty but I have also crushed it and mixed it in her wet food. There is a site that tells a bit about it and a cat named Jasper if you're interested: http://laurieulrich.com/jasper/ I was never sure about the alcohol wipes, some do and some don't but I cleaned it once a day and never noticed any breakdown. Hope this helps a bit :-D

Re: RANDOM QUESTIONS/spray version if B-12

Thank you 2 for your replies!!

I ordered some zobaline.....never heard of it before...so again BIG THANKS!!

I will crush it up I think...never tried a pill pocket?....

also the link you gave me about jasper, talks about a spray version.

has anyone tried that?

thanks again!! very helpful

You're welcome:) Sorry I don't know about the spray. The vitamin I use is tasteless (I tasted it!) and once crushed dissolved quick in a bit of water which I mixed in food.

Pill pockets are awesome for anyone who has to give pills to a difficult to pill cat ;-) Some people put their pills (especially bitter ones) in an empty gel capsule and put part of the pill pocket around the capsule but my kitty is ok with the small chunk of vitamins rolled in the middle of it. If you have trouble pilling in the future, I think all pet food stores that I've been in stock them but only certain ones have the hypoallergenic/low carb one that is duck/pea (and it's in the dog section, they are huge which is why I only use 1/5 of a piece or so at a time). I can only find them at global pets in my small town. You can order them online though, this is what they look like: http://www.amazon.com/Canine-Pocket...mula/dp/B003E728CE/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

My Chyna cat thinks they are a treat, I take a tiny piece of the pocket and form it around the pill and if she won't eat it plain, I roll it in the crumbs from purebites freeze dried treats to make it smell like a treat :-D

Pill Pockets are a a great help with my basement cat, Mason. He hasn't quite forgiven me for putting hands on him to restrain him and put on topical flea treatment! I can get Capstar into him using the pockets.

Someone else mentioned a piece of American cheese may work, too.

Be sure to chase the pill with a bit of water from a needleless syringe. Pills can get stuck in the esophagus and cause issues.

hey there

vaccinations: my vet does not want to vaccinate Tom (just normal annual) because of his newly DX. he said not at this time.....and that since Tom was 9 he had plenty of built-up resistance anyway and not too worry. do you agree/disagree?
Does tomtom go outside unescorted? My boys only get vaccinated every couple of years. I do bloodwork on interim years. Saves money.

2. do I keep the same dose that Tom will be currently at during the travel w/end? do I back off a bit so I am not overly worried about him going too low while trying to enjoy family (not that I will be able to think about anything but the super stressed out cat)? ok i had to read this like four times. You want to wait till nearer the time. I would take the test kit and see how his BG is when you are there. He might be high due to stress. Or not. he might eat. or not. it might vary . You will need to play by ear. If in doubt, shoot a reduce dose or skip.

..Methylcobalamin. is this prescription only? is this too "hard core" as a preventative? if not......how do I buy it?
Methylcobalamin pills ( vit B12) will help. Takes 4-6 weeks and works better when the cats BG is regulated. You can get them from most health food stores.

Are supposed to feed veggies/fruits? I don't think so right? or is it not that big of a deal? this certainly would not be a daily meal
Some cat foods have these in them to provide additional nutrients. I dont think its a big deal as long as your calories from carbs are <10^%

4b. fancy feast kitten has milk in it
. Cats are lactose intolerant. Plus in some cats it can spike BG> why are you feeding this?
5. Alcohol wipes: do you all wipe your insulin vial before each and every with-drawl?
no not necessary.
