hey all: does anyone have any answers for my over-active mind today?
1. vaccinations: my vet does not want to vaccinate Tom (just normal annual) because of his newly DX. he said not at this time.....and that since Tom was 9 he had plenty of built-up resistance anyway and not too worry. do you agree/disagree?
2. traveling: I am going to have to go on a weekend visit out of town to see my dad (REALLY REALLY REALLY DO NOT WANT TO....but I have to spend time with him and obviously miss him...plus DH is going nuts not going anywhere this summer) anyway.....Tom is going to go with. first time ever! thank goodness the drive is less than 3 hours and the house we will stay at is vacant. He does not travel well though...at least not to the vets...but I have to take him. Here is the question:
do I keep the same dose that Tom will be currently at during the travel w/end? do I back off a bit so I am not overly worried about him going too low while trying to enjoy family (not that I will be able to think about anything but the super stressed out cat)? Do I back off a few days before? or do you just keep it the same since you know the cat will be sky-high away from the comforts of home and the known. not too mention: perhaps he won't eat. he never eats while at the vets. obviously, if he doesn't eat, I won't give his shot...or do I at a reduced dose? I won't have internet there!! AHHHHHHH hear me scream?!!!! I am not too sure when we are going....I am just stressing now. and I haven't even planned on a date!! go figure.
I realize this question will be best answered a few days before departing to read his SS at the time
it is actually a good idea to go sooner rather than later given he is not anywhere near "greens" yet......agreed?
I already called Walgreens about if all Walgreens are "hooked up together" in their system just in case I need to refill his Lantus while away from my Walgreens with the prescription on file. They said yes. so that concern is over.
3. Leg weakness-Tom does not walk on his hocks. He does go up and down the basement stairs very well. but I notice that when he stops walking and pauses....he does slump....just slowly goes down a little in the back legs. I would like to stop any muscle wasting now before it gets worse. I realize the best medicine for this is .....insulin. but anything else I can do now? I know ....well, kinda know about....Methylcobalamin. is this prescription only? is this too "hard core" as a preventative? if not......how do I buy it?
4. food: why do most "higher quality" foods have veggies and fruits in them? example: I bought some NATURE'S VARIETY:
95% meat: well, I notice when I have to out on his plate all these hunks of greens...which are artichokes, cranberries, kale, broccoli, cabbage, tomato, pumpkin....well this stuff is super expensive, but super low carb and 11% protein.
Are supposed to feed veggies/fruits? I don't think so right? or is it not that big of a deal? this certainly would not be a daily meal
4b. fancy feast kitten has milk in it. does it cause any GI upsets with anyone? I am always worried to give to Tom because of that. I have never given him milk
5. Alcohol wipes: do you all wipe your insulin vial before each and every with-drawl? I always do but was wondering if this could actually cause harm to the rubber part on the vial...perhaps dry it out? I am using ReliOn Alcohol Swabs which are 70% alcohol
okay I think that is all for the night
thanks for any input~~~KELLY
