Ran Out of Insulin

Hi All;

Will it harm my cat to go without his insulin shot for one night? He gets 2 units in the morning and at night and has been on insulin for 5 years.

No, my vet lives down the street and he does it.

My cat has been "fair" for the past year or so. Not getting better but no worse. He is 16.

If you would like to be more proactive about your kitty's care and maybe improve overall health, we have a protocol that works. We feed wet lo carb food (http://www.catinfo.org), use mild long lasting insulins (PZI, Lantus or Levemir) and test at home so we know it is always safe to give a shot and we know how the insulin is working and how to adjust it. Video for hometesting We have a high rate of regulation and remission.

The vet prescribed Caninsulin.

Not better after six years of insulin is what I meant.

I don't know if those insulins are available in Canada but will check with my vet - who I am going to see tomorrow. Thanks for this information.

Lantus and Levemir are definitely available in Canada at pretty much any human pharmacy.

We buy the 5-pack of 3-ml cartridges made for use with the pen, but most of us use syringes to draw out the insulin from the cartridge and inject.

We have several members in the greater Toronto area.

You may want to switch from Caninsulin, there have been warnings on it that you may want to print out and give to your vet. Caninsulin/ Vetsulin are the same.

You do not get Lantus or Levemir from your vet; just go to Shopper's Drugmart or a pharmacy near you and buy it at the pharmacy. You do not need any rx either. You would need to purchase U100 syringes also at the pharmacy, the BD ones with 1/2 unit markings.
I like to get everything at Shoppers as they have their points card and a couple times a year, I get my package of Levemir 5 cartridges for just my points.

I am sure that with home testing and a better longer lasting insulin, you are see a great improvement in your cat very soon after changing insulin. I was using Caninsulin for one of my cats and she did horribly until we switched to Lantus, another good insulin.

Thanks. I am going to check this out with my vet. But honestly, it makes me nervous to change Booboo's insulin after this long time and at his advanced age (16).

I wonder why Health Canada hasn't put out a warning?

just as a heads up, your vet may not be aware that human insulins can be used for cats.
And as far as Toronto is concerned, you can easily purchase Lantus (also known as glargine) for example at any pharmacy. Costco has a good deal, 5 pack 3ml vials for about $95, no prescription or membership needed. Same with Shoppers Drug Mart, but around $120 for the 5 pack.

I too had up's and down with Caninsulin last year and made the switch to a human insulin such as Lantus with wonderful gentler results.
It would help you a great deal to learn how to home test, not to mention, save you money from getting blood glucose testing done at the vets.
A low carb wet food diet makes amazing physical improvements as well as can help lower blood glucose numbers.
 
You will see an improvement in your cat - changing from an insulin that is more suited for dogs, and has warnings against its use over to an insulin that is used by many and resulting in much healthier cats is a good idea.
You will see an improvement within days I bet.

As I said, print out the warning info from the links we have provided and give them to your vet.
You do not need your vet's permission to use another insulin and being in Canada, you don't need any prescription from your vet or any dr.
