Last night Radar projectile vomited but ate a little after, so we just thought that maybe he ate his dinner to quickly. This morning he did not want to eat, just laying there - not his normal frisky self. We brought him the ER early this morning. They did an xray and couldn't see any obstruction. His lungs looked good, but to us his breathing sounds labored. They will keep him the majority of today to monitor and see if the vomiting continues.
When it rains it pours!
Keep Radar and Klinger in your thoughts and prayers.

Marcy,
I hope the vets are considering that something could have affected both Klinger and Radar? To have both cats come down with the same symptoms within a week of one another seems unusual. Being diabetic with a perhaps weakened immune system, Klinger would have been more easily affected so it happened to him first.

I'm sure there is nothing you did to cause it, but I worry about pet food a lot because of all the past issues.

(((((Marcy))))) I'm so sorry you're having to deal with all this right before the holidays. I will keep you and Klinger and Radar and DH in my thoughts.

Oh no Marcy! I agree with Vicky. It sounds like the same thing could be wrong. Do you remember what food you were feeding them at the time? What brand?

Sending prayers for Radar too!

I'm so sorry Marcy! I hated reading this. Prayers going out they figure out quickly what's going on with Radar. I hope Klinger is continuing to improve. :YMHUG:

I've called our vet to ask could Klinger and Radar have eaten something or could Radar have come from the shelter with something that Klinger picked up. She didn't dismiss it, but I get the feeling that it's not on her high list of suspects. She's going to feed him now and see if he keeps the food down. The xrays showed a small trachea. At the time she tought it was just a possibility that he took a breath when the xray took the shot. Now she's wondering if it's collapsed, which would explain Radar's labored breathing. She said it's rare in cats and happens more commonly in small dogs. A radiolodist comes in at 1:00 pm MT and she wants her to take a look and she'll call us with their prognosis.

Klinger and Radar both eat canned Fancy Feast - Radar is currently eating the Kitten formula and Klinger was eating the Classic varieties. They both ate raw rabbit last Saturday, but I imagine it would have hit Radar sooner if it was from that, no?

Thanks for the continued prayers for ((((my boys))))! I'll let you know when I hear from the vet.

Dear lord you and your babies got slammed! Please know that FWIW I will keep all of you in my thoughts while sending out the dearest well wishes for the family.
If you need anything that NK might have on hand just holler. I do have 2 bags of fluids and dozens of needles. It occured to me that shipping them is likely more expensive than buying them.
Just want to be of some help. :YMHUG:

The radiologist confirmed that Radar does have a collapsed trachea. We could either pick him up and schedule an appt with an internist - earliest appt is Thursday; they could give him steroids and abx and we could pick him up and see how he does; or he could spend the night and see an internist in the morning (the overnighters get first dibs on the internists). We chose the last option. They'll call us tonight to give a status update and then once the internist reviews his case in the morning, they'll call with how to treat this long term. They said that he ate like a champ and has so far kept the food down.

Because this is rare, does anyone know of any other cases??

Klinger keeps looking for Radar under the bed. Klinger's eating a little better today. His BG numbers are good. He's not himself yet...his nose is still a little pale. I would love to see it bright pink again!

Thanks for all the support. I don't know what we would do without it. :YMHUG:

Oh Marcy I'm so sorry to read that Radar is sick too! Double-teamed by fate, it's not fair. One sick kitty is bad enough, but two is even worse. You guys are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Glad to hear Klinger is eating, purring and cuddling, these are good signs. ((((Klinger, C'mon your internet groupies are rooting for you!))))

I wish I had advice or suggestions for Radar but I'm not familiar with a collapsed trachea. For what it's worth, I think you made the right decision to leave him overnight. The sooner he's seen by an internist, the better.

Marcy, when I saw the subject line I was like....WHAT??? that can't be... so sorry to hear Radar is having problems. I was also going to suggest their food, but it was different, at least you have an answer to his problem.
Adding Radar to the list of prayers for feeling better along with Klinger.

Get well boys so your mama can rest!

Here's the vet report on Radar:
Based on abdominal xrays yesterday an no vomiting today, we suspect that Radar had a transient gastroenteritis. There was some concern from the thoracic xrays yesterday that Radar had a narrowed trachea, either due to tracheal collapse of congenital narrowing. Fluoroscopy was done today to fully evaluate the trachea and it was normal. We suspect that yesterday the esophagus had fluid in it from the vomiting and was overlying the trachea, making it look narrowed. Blood work was submitted to our lab today to screen for other causes of vomiting and those results should be in by tomorrow.

Radar also had a mild upper respiratory infection. While this is uaually caused by a virus, we are starting him on an antibiotic for secondary bacterial infection.

So, Radar is home and back in the spare bedroom. He's full of energy and keeps escaping every time we open the door. Craig's going to spend the night with him tonight.

Thanks for all the well wishes. Keep him in your prayers.

Geez, I don't check the lev board for a couple days and everything goes to heck in a hand basket....Poor Boys I hope both get to feeling better really soon. Glad to here Radar is improving...but how is that handsome fellow Klinger doing?

So glad to hear he's seems to be on the mend! I have been worrying all day about your boys! The thought of him escaping every time the door was open made me smile. And I had to laugh at you saying Craig was spending the night with him. I have been sleeping on the couch with Thumper for over a week now, DH has joined us on the other couch the past few nights, and 3 of the other 4 cats have been taking turns sleeping with us.

That's a relief. I was worried about some sort of congenital problem that got worse as he grew...

I hope you find a cause of the vomiting. But maybe it just was one of those things and you will never know.

I have to laugh over all the "spending the night" comments. I have 2-3 cats on my bed every night. And if I tried to sleep somewhere else, I would have a whole entourage following me there.

Thanks again for all of your support! Radar seems to be fine except for some sneezing. We're still giving him the ab and adding l-lysine in with his food. So, hopefully that will clear up soon. For those of you that are interested, I've attached the Xray that shows how narrow his trachea was from the vomiting episode.
We have also started using a timed feeder for Radar to help him from wolfing down a whole can at one time. He's taken to it pretty well. :-D

Yeah, wow, you can really see it there. Kinda scary. Are they going to do a follow up xray? Or did they already to see if it goes back to normal?

Good idea with the timer feeder. Silly boy.

They did the fluroscopy the following morning and that showed everything was normal. Now we just keep an eye on him and hope that it was a one time deal. nailbite_smile

Hi Marcy, Sorry I haven't posted much, but I have been checking in on you and the boys. So glad that Radar's condition was not as sever as originally thought. Thanks for sharing the x-ray for educational purposes.

Hope the little guy is feeling better!
