my parents cat is due for his 3 year rabies shot. I just wanted to make sure there was nothing special I should be asking the vet about? Anything to stay away from? Thank you.

Many vets and others recommend use of the Merial's a non-adjuvenated "Purevax" rabies vaccine. Other rabies vaccines contain an adjuvate which is associated Vaccine-associated sarcoma. The downfall is that is is only a one-year vaccine.

I had a scare once, when both of my cats developed a lump (at the back of their necks  where the vaccines were given) about 2 weeks or so afterwards. I now, only get the one year Merial vaccine and insist that it be given in a leg.

And is this a popular enough vaccine that most vets would have it now? And what is the purpose of having it done in the legs, instead of the scruff? Thanks guys!

Most vets should know about the Merial PureVax. Maybe call ahead of time and make sure the vet wil be giving the PureVax. If not, he/she can order it in.

If the vaccine causes some kind of reaction, a leg is easier to amputate to limit the spread of the reaction than a neck

yikes .. scary stuff to think about! I will go with my parents and make sure he get's the right stuff. Mocha is due for her's soon as well.

I was surprised when I insisted on it, that my vet had it. I think it's popular enough.

Long ago, I used a farm vet that shot my cats in the back of the neck.

If the cat got his shot in the leg and If the cat got cancer from the vaccine, a leg can be taken off.
I don't know that much. I just called my (farm) vet when it happened, and he said it should go away in a few weeks. I think it took about almost 4 weeks. It was scary.

Here's a link to help explain it better http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=526

Both cat only vets I've gone to over the years only use the 1 year rabies as there have been problems with the 3 years rabies shot.

Thanks for the article. I will definitely ask for this vaccine .. my question is, is it ok to be administered by a shot, or should I ask for it nasally?

Well took my parents cat to the vet today for a well check up .. The vet did not have the purevax vaccine in her office .. and she could get it, but she'd have to order an entire tray of it .. and she didn't want to "dismiss" my concerns of course, but she's been in practice since forever and her and her colleagues have never had a cat develop cancer from the rabies vaccine .. of course it IS always a possibility but it was up to my parents ............... so they ended up going with the 3 year booster shot, in his rear leg .. Fingers crossed he does not have any complications.

I believe the name that she said was merck something or other.

When my parents asked specifically about their cat's weight, and if he should go on a wet cat food diet, she said no .. it's much easier to feed dry *eye roll*

Thanks for the advice on the vaccine ... I will insist on it for mocha and twix.

I know I am chiming in late. Can't believe I missed a post about vaccines. As the others have stated, when you take your babies in, make sure they get all vaccines in their limbs-NEVER the SCRUFF! That includes all vaccines, and IMHO anything injectable that causes inflammation. The inflammation is what has been linked to VAS, or otherwise known as ISS(injectable site sarcoma), since other things have been traced to these sarcomas other than vaccinations. While it is considered rare to even get VAS it is more rare that other things cause it, but why not play it safe.
