I posted this before, about the better rabies vaccine and got the answer about purevax .. my only question is .. what do you do when your vet, and the other vets in town, don't carry that vaccine? Do you just take a leap of faith and go with the other vaccine, and hope and pray for the best? Or do you just assume because your cat is indoors all the time a rabies vaccine is not needed? All the vets I have talked to said that in their X years of practice no cat has developed cancer from that vaccine .. but .. I'm nervous of course ..

Ugh. Hey Devon-
I'd have the same questions if I were in your shoes. Trink had to get a rabies shot recently and luckily they had purevax...if they didn't I wouldn't know what to do either. I'm curious to hear what people say. I also found out that only a vet can administer the shot-not a tech-so I had to pay for a full exam as opposed to bringing her in just for the shot. Annoying!

Can your vet order a tray of the purevax? Does your vet believe your cats should be vaccinated every year? IMHO, that would be over-vaccinating. Also, just because your vet has never seen a case of cancer from a vaccine does not mean it doesn't happen- happened to my Remi. Honestly, any vaccine- yes, even the purevax- has been linked to VAS(vaccine associated sarcoma) though the purevax seems to be more rare. If you must get any vaccination just make sure your vet follows the vaccination protocol and gives it in the limb.

Thanks you guys .. I did ask one vet about the purevax and she said she could order a tray in, but she said it in a way that definitely gave me the impression that was the last thing she wanted to do .. I had an older cat once who was always indoors and when it was her time to go, she actually bit the vet tech during the procedure (she wasn't calm at all) and I found out a few days later they had to test her for rabies ... it was hard for me to cope with because it had been a bad experience and that only made it worse .. I promised myself I'd get my future cat's vaccinated so they would never have to be treated like that (even after they passed) but now I'm worried about the possible outcome with the vaccines .. I guess I might have to just go with the other rabies meds and pray for the best .. and I would have them do it in the leg also.

Hi Devon,
I don't know anything about the purevax, but my vet never gives the 3-year rabies to cats. He'll give the 3-year rabies to dogs, but he thinkgs its risky to give it to cats (sorry, I don't remember why). So if you can't get the purevax, make sure that you don't get the 3-year rabies shot. Hope this helps.
