I'm just curious if anyone has heard of these three types of canned wet food.

Weruva
Against the grain
Tiki cat

I went to all the best pet store and got to talking to someone who works there and she recommended these for a diabetic cat. I would like to get my kitty off the DM because even though it might sound crazy, we bought a new case recently and suddenly our kitty's numbers were in the 200s. And it's just too coincidental to ignore. Just curious if these foods would be safe to give to him. She gave us a few cans for free and aid they have had so much success. I want to test it and see if his numbers go down at all but wanted to check with my expert friends here first!

I don't know where you are located, but check this list and pick some foods that are under 10% carbs

http://www.catinfo.org/docs/Food%20Char ... -22-12.pdf

and you should be able to return the DM for a refund or credit.... just say your cat has refused to eat it now.

Thanks for the link, I read so much of her site and now have percentage numbers and formulas confusing me although her information is so very much appreciated and I see why she started making her own cat food. I know a number of folks here feed fancy feast but I'm just curious because they are in 3oz cans and if my math is correct the carbs end up being higher than that of DM since it comes in 5.5 oz cans. Sorta confused and just wondering which fancy feast most of you use. At this point I trust all of you so much! Thank you for the continued help and support

There's nothing wrong with the fancy feast and if the carbs were higher, they would reflect in the diabetic cats' numbers, but their numbers are fine. You want to feed pates in any of the brands you get.

The DM food is expensive, most cats won't eat it, and it's crap.

Hi Sammysmom!

Did you get to Dr. Lisa's charts? The way the link is set up now, it doesn't go directly to the charts. There's a lot of written information (formulas, etc.), but the charts clearly list the carbs percentages for many cat foods and take into account that the Fancy Feast cans are 3 oz. -- so you can just pick any on the list that are under 10% carbs. Stay away from the gravy or sauce types!

Good luck!

Thanks blue and jacksoncatson! That does help. I saw that chart which was so amazingly thorough. I guess I was just confused, I'm so very bad at math, and still getting used to percentages versus actual numbers. Have either of you found any particular fancy feast pate to the best?

I tried 2 different Tiki Cat varieties - straight chicken plus the chicken and egg.
My clouder of 15 loved both. The plain chicken looks very much like cooked shredded chicken. The one with egg has cubes of scrambled egg in it. Since I have a couple who vomit on cubed/sliced/chunky food, I'd only buy the straight chicken one ... if I had the budget for it.

I compared the turkey and giblets version of Wellness vs Friskies. Wellness comes in an 11.5 oz can; Friskies in a 13 oz can. The calorie count of the respective cans worked out about the same. The price differential was considerable. I can get Friskies for about $0.84/13 oz can, while Wellness was about $2.36/11 oz can. At 8 cans a day of the Wellness, it has been busting my budget. It did, however give the juvenile cats a good catch up on growth and development and they are sleek and sassy. There is a bit of difference between feeding just one or the other, probably due to the quality of the protein. When I fed straight Wellness, it took 4 cans. Feeding straight Friskies, it takes about 4.5 to 5 cans.

Thank you all for your help. I went to petco and bought a case of the classic turkey and giblets (no gravy). I'm convinced now that the DM is not the right food, and I thank you all for your help and patience in trying to help me sort this out. It's been tough because he has been on the DM for so long and when we switched over to only canned and got such great results I have been so hesitant and nervous to try something else. It seems after weeks of good numbers that his little pancreas is totally capable of producing the right amount of insulin. But after having bought another case and seeing such a dramatic increase in his numbers, I'm inclined to agree with Blue that it's crap. I think this batch has a much higher carb content and I don't want to continue to buy a product that yields such inconsistent diabetic management. I know it's possible it could be something else that is causing this apparent relapse but I have to at least try something new before giving in. I only had one can of the tiki cat food, gave it to him last night and three hours after eating (no insulin) he was at 115. This morning we had to give him the DM since the tiki cat food was just a trial and 5 hours after eating ( no insulin) he was at 336. I'm done! No more DM! Now I just need to think about how to have this conversation with the vet...

Its your choice what to do.

You might show him the data; that should be pretty persuasive.
And you're allowed to say your cat won't eat it and refuse to buy more from the vet.
Or merely be polite and say you've got it covered and just not discuss it.
