Hey everyone!

So I've been tracking Harry's glucose levels a bit better now, but I'm still not a total expert on it so I'm not totally sure how much insulin to give at any given time. He's been prescribed 1u Vetsulin, and we've been slightly increasing it as necessary -- yesterday PM he was at 352 and we gave him 1.25.

My question is: I just checked his glucose and he's at 429. Should I give him 1.5u or 1.25 or? I'm still not totally sure how to alter dosing based on his levels, so.

Thank you! Here's his sheet for reference: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...QmaZxIcNmcAoPd_uykyD56wyQo/edit#gid=361360320

edit: He started eating right after I posted this so his glucose might go up a little bit more. Still haven't given him his shot, but if I don't get anything in the next 15 minutes or so I'll probably give him some cause we're pretty close to his normal time. Thank you in advance!

It's great that you're testing and logging data on the spreadsheet. I don't see a BG number for this AM before you gave insulin. Are you removing all food for at least 2 hours before these preshot tests?

Here are some suggestions:
  • test BG before every shot AM and PM to see whether the planned dose is too high or not
  • keep a dose for several cycles (6 or so) before changing it so you get a fuller picture of what it does
  • aim to get more tests in the middle part of a cycle to see how low the BG is dropping
  • sliding scale dosing (changing dose based on preshot BG) is something to try later after accumulating more data. Right now it adds to the confusion.
Why not keep 1 u for tonight and tomorrow AM and PM. Add in extra tests as you can. That should give a better idea of whether an increase is needed.

Thank you! Much appreciated. I'm still pretty new to this whole daily testing thing. I'll be able to be better about it starting next week, but my current work schedule gives me some issues but it'll be changing soon. Was running a little behind today so I wasn't able to test him. It's kind of hard to remove food for two hours because we have another kitten -- do you have any suggestions for that?

And same sort of thing with the more tests in the middle -- my work schedule keeps me out of the house for most of the cycle, then I'm asleep for a large portion of the second one. I'll keep him at 1u for now, though, and I'll regulate him a bit tighter once my work schedule changes. Thank you so much!

Are both of your kitties free feeders? Do you leave food out for them overnight? Many people use automated pet feeders. If you had one for each kitty you could set the times so that neither of them had access to food for 2 hours before your diabetic kitty's preshot test time.

I have three cats but they aren't free fed. They eat scheduled meals in three separate rooms because of different types and amounts of food.

They are, and I do. I feed them raw diets so I'm not sure if there's an automated feeder for that? I just worry about bacteria and such getting into things.
