Just started testing tonight!! My Mav came up with a 74! No insulin.

Now.... I haven't integrated the new food yet. So, how long after his eating before I can test again?

How do I know the meter is right?

What is the best time to test in the morning? (i.e. Waking up, before food, after food...)

What insulin is Maverick on?

You can test whenever you feel like testing after food, from what I understand, food can have an affect on numbers for 2 hours after eating. I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Which meter are you using? Some ways to test it might be to get consecutive tests and compare, or maybe even test yourself a few times.

I know for ProZinc anyways, most people test before food and insulin (around shot time) then feed, then shoot, all within 15 minutes or so.

Congrats on starting to home test!

See my signature link Glucometer Notes for reference ranges.
No shot if less than 200 mg/dL.

Well done on the home testing. :)

74 is a normal range number! On no insulin at all? What food is Maverick eating at the moment? Also, what meter are you using.

BTW, the regime for a cat that needs insulin is to test, then feed, and then inject. On low numbers with little data, post here with the numbers and ask for help and also contact your vets to let them know about the lower numbers.

If you're not sure about a result, you can test again immediately. Also, you can get something called control solution to check your meter function. It contains a known amount of glucose and provided a test done on the control solution is within the specified range it indicates that your meter is OK.

I tested myself prior to him and mine was 73.
Mav is on Humulin N.

I am using the One Touch Ultra Mini.

The vet is not involved on this as he told me that I could not test at home, that it was impossible.

Mavs food has not been switched to a low carb yet because I was only able to purchase the meter yesterday.

He is a steroid induced diabetic, and I'm desperately hoping he's transient.

Of course! I'm getting food tonight. Weather here in western NY hasn't been travel friendly lately! I plan on going back to the grain free they were on prior.
My other is 13 and was diagnosed with kidney disease about 7 months ago so I just have to be careful. I will still leave dry food down for snacking for both of them during the day, just not sure what kind yet :)

If you can ditch the dry.....leave catsicles (details on your FB thread)....or another option is a timed feeder which many here use to dispatch food throughout the day, it would be so much better. Many a cat has come out of remission from 'just a little bit' of dry. Dr. Lisa's site explains it best...and eliminating the dry is SO important as well for your kidney cat. Add water to the LC canned food servings spread throughout the day and you'll see how much it benefits their overall health. Also grain free does not always = LC ...best to verify on the food charts and keep it < 10% calories from carbs.
I cannot believe the scenes I am seeing from East Coast. I guess if you are from Buffalo you are hard core...hate to tell ya we had unseasonably warm 80+ degree days here this week...crazy!!
