Hi guys. Hardey is doing great today, but my poor nephew (21 years old) accidently stepped on his 8 month old cat (Maxwell) and broke his leg. :(

He took him to the emergency vet and they gave him bupe and an antibiotic. The bupe is .2 of 1 ml syringe every 8 hours. The cat weighs about 9 pounds. Does this seem right? He said they gave him some at the vet and Maxwell is big-eyed and trying to hobble around (I assume that means he is not in pain). The big eyes kind of bothered me though - I know bupe is a narcotic, but should he be that doped up?

I told my nephew to wait until tomorrow morning to give the next dose. Just wanted to check and see what you guys thought. I know he has to take bupe on an empty stomach.

Still trying to get the details of the anti-biotic. I know he said it's a pink liquid and he has to give 4ml every 8 hours. That seems like alot. He's going to try putting it in food, but I have a feeling that is going to be a problem since I'm sure it tastes terrible. I so wish they had given pills.

My poor nephew is beside himself. He feels so bad for hurting his baby.

Broken bones are very painful. And yes, the wide eyes will happen. It is best for the kitten to confine him to a smaller space where he can't hurt himself further due to his disorientation.

Give the antibiotic separately from the food as it is very unlikely the kitten will eat it. Also, look for a decimal point - maybe it is 0.4 mL for the kitten, which seems much more likely based on antibiotic doses I've given cats.

The antibiotic is amoxicillan 125mg/5ml susp 150ml. Dosage is 4mls by mouth twice daily for 7 days. I'll check with nephew, but he says no decimal point.

That doesn't seem correct; 4/5*125=100 mg seems awfully large for a kitten. How big is the kitten?

Contact the vet and verify.

Amoxi-drops
States "5-10 mg/lb" so in the ball park after all.

They mixed it rather diluted. It might've been easier to do tablets.

Is an actaul infection present, or skin broken over the limb?

There is a cut on his leg.

I wish they had given him pills too. Would have been so much easier.

If not too expensive, contact them tomorrow and see about the pills.

Those may go down easily wrapped with pea (low carb) pill pockets, or a bit of processed cheese.

Thanks for your help. I feel so bad for him. He's a wreck. I'm going to contact my vet in the morning and see if they will give me the pills. I'm thinking the bupe should be pretty easy for him to give to his cat since it's such a small amount. The anti-biotic looks like trouble though. My nephew doesn't have internet so he can't even watch some videos on how to give the liquid.

It may work best to divide the dose into 0.5 to 1.0 mL amounts and do consecutive rounds.

I kneel on the floor, straddling the cat.
- Left hand on top of head, to gently pry open mouth. Point syringe towards back, left and slowly squirt in no faster than cat can swallow.
- switch hands if left handed
As needed, you can gently swueeze the legs around the cat for additional restraint.

Give a treat afterwards - food, petting, a toy - whatever is a positive for the cat.
