A few people told me to get a human monitor, but I had read that those test differently than cat's blood and is inaccurate? Do you guys all just use them and adjust the numbers from human to cat?
Do you guys go by the dosage the vet recommended every single time, or do you do it like human diabetics do and test every time and adjust the insulin accordingly?

Onto Roxy...

I took her in a week ago after her seizure. and they lowered her dose to 1 unit of vetsulin 2x a day.

Today was her blood glucose curve, they kept her almost until closing because her "numbers were so close to stable" and they brought her back up to 2 units.

She was given 1unit with a half can of wet food at 7:45a before heading in:

8:38a: 567g/dl
10:40a: 479g/dl
12:40p: 386g/dl
2:45p: 326g/dl
4:20p: 407g/dl

No, we do not generally do conversions between human and pet meters. The tools on this site were developed using human meters since pet meters are relatively new in the market. And human meters are much cheaper to operate. The numbers are pretty different in the higher range (>300 or so), but either way you know your cat’s BG is too high. In the lower numbers, they’re pretty comparable given the 20% variance in meters. The biggest difference is in what the hypo number is. On a pet meter, anything lower than 68 is cause for concern. On a human meter, that’s 50.

Personally, since discovering this site I don’t really talk to my vet about Chloe’s diabetes. I have been able to manage it with food, home testing, her insulin, and the resources here. I just needed the vet for the script.

We generally alter doses in .25U increments rather than whole units. It doesn’t look like that much different in the syringe, but cats’ bodies are so much smaller it can make a big difference. Going from 1U to 2U is a 100% increase and will probably rock her body a little wildly.

Depending on how frequently you’re able to test, we increase doses every couple of days if they’re not working, or decrease immediately if your cat goes hypo.

Also, it would be a good idea to setup your signature and spreadsheet so that you can get better dosing assistance :-)

lol i tried today but it said it was too big. I'll monkey with it tomorrow.
thank you for all the info, i feel like the vet hasn't been listening, so i wonder if learning on my own here would be better for my lil roxy. i'm going to look deeper into this site. thank you so much for the answer it was very helpful.

The signature only allows 2 lines, but the second line only starts once you hit “enter.” As you may have seen in other signatures, our first line can go on for a few while still only counting as one. Most of us just put the link to our SS as the only thing in line 2.

I think you will find that this group will be more responsive to every question you have, big or small, where it may take 24 hours for a vet to respond. Plus you will have a tendency to only ask pressing questions of the vet whereas here, you can learn a lot just by reading. And questions are welcomed. You won't be on your own here. There is usually somebody awake that can address your immediate concerns.
