this Tuesday she has her dental cleaning and possible extraction (also going to remove a mass from her back where the injection site was when first diagnosed and was told to shoot only in scruff and in the same spot which I have not done to her since end of October- since then it’s been in her flank or side of belly)
Vet wants to biopsy it and make sure it’s not cancerous.
Two questions
Should I bother having it removed because it’s for sure from the injections I was giving in the same spot and it hasn’t dissolved yet? Only hesitation would be it costing an extra 500$ If it’s unnecessary and having it stress her out having an Incisionon on her back to heal?

Second question
they want her drop off to be 8:30am (and I usually give her am shot at 9:30) but told me they could always give her the shot which I’m nervous to have her doing -I can’t believe I actually believe I would give the shot better than the techs and even vet (based on my past experience when she was released after being DKA of them telling me to use a pen needle <and an EXTRA long one> to just “stick it straight down into her” (which I now know is most definitely going to give her a muscle shot especially with the length of the pen needle) and to decrease by 1 whole unit or skip entirely if her numbers are on the low side (I think low was 34, then got up to 110 after eating and riding into the car to the ER because I freaked out when I first saw that number and it was before I joined this life saving group back in October

Ok so my question is- should I tell them how I give her the shot (meaning with a digital caliper and on the side of her tummy? Or should I do it myself and insist I bring her in at 9:30 after her shot)
Or wait- aren’t you not supposed to eat before surgery? Should she just skip her am shot?
Should she get a reduced shot?

Oh also forgot a different vet tech told me to “roll the Lantus pen” before drawing it with the pen needle..
As I type this it makes me so angry to think they don’t know simple things that could seriously alter a diabetic kitties life.

Rosa, no vet clinic is going to give Mimi her shot of insulin by measuring with calipers. You can forget that right now.
Usually, the insulin dose is SKIPPED the morning of any surgery.
"Better too high for a day, than too low for a moment."

Anesthesia can affect the BG levels, so you don't want Mimi to have a hypo while under anesthesia. Skip the shot in the AM.
"Better too high for a day, than too low for a moment." (Yes, I'm repeating this again.)
The vets should have told you their procedures before surgery and anesthesia.
Usually no food for at least 6-8 hours before you take her in. Some vets have you withhold food and water from midnight on.

Call the vet clinic and ask on Monday. The dental is not scheduled until Tuesday.

As far as the mass removal is concerned, that is up to you and your vet.

It astounds me how little vets know about diabetes... its actually unnerving...

Vet visit in 8 hours for her dental surgery

talked to vet tech about skipping dose and they said to bring her medication anyway.
I waited longer to give her tonight’s shot in hopes that maybe she’ll be done early tomorrow and I can just shoot her dose late? Or should I not bother at all..
Drop off is at 8:30 and she’ll most likely get the surgery closer to 9:30 so what if she was done at like 11:30 and I gave her the shot late? Or could it interfere with the sedative they give...

Just skip the shot and "forget" the insulin at home. She'll be fine with one skip. Pretend it was a fur shot. Good luck with the dental tomorrow.

shoot I didn't read this in time.
They wanted to give her a shot- they gave her 1 unit instead of 1.25 and said if she drops during surgery they have glucose to bring her up that they would rather bring her up then have her blood sugar go too high.
She's awake now- and didn't need any extractions!! Just a really good cleaning! Also the lump on her back that they found that they thought might be cancerous or concerning they couldn't find!? Ive been doing Reiki on Mimi the last month maybe its helping her little body?!?

I am trying to get the vet tech to make her eat something though since the last time she ate was at 7 am and its now almost 1- They said "oh well she probably won't want to eat" and Im like " can you try though because she usually eats every 3 -4 hours and also they gave her the 1 unit shot at 9:30 and I waited till 10:30 last night to give it to her because I was almost certain I wasn't going to give her the shot today. But the vet said he felt it was ok to and preferred to..

Get to pick her up at 2 pm which if she hasn't eaten means she could be dropping in BG. I asked them when the last time they checked her BG (this was almost an hour ago when they called) and they had checked it like 30 minutes ago at that point but didn't tell me what it was.. I left her Freestyle meter and test strips with her so I can know her actual BG because I know the ALphatrak they use reads higher.

Im sitting here waiting and worried a little that her BG could be dropping around nadir and they aren't aware of TR and how often we check.. I think Im going to call them and see if they can do another test..

Rosa, sending you some calming vines. I know how worried you are about Mimi being ok after her dental.
She'll love being able to come home with you, and get some of the "vetty smell" off her.

She might not be very hungry, until she wakes up more from the anesthesia. Take it slow and easy on the food.

Nice to hear that the "lump" had disappeared, and they did not have to do additional surgery. Good news!
