*sigh* Oh Edgar my special needs kitty.

Edgar's had kidney failure, is running on only one kidney working at about 25%, and a couple years ago started having seizures. He's on Keppra 3x/day for that.

Only recently diagnosed diabetic (see SS). I've added Zobaline 1x/day, but his neuropathy is steadily and rapidly getting worse. Daily. He also just had another seizure this weekend, which was only a week after his last one. He used to have them at about 9 month intervals, so this is alarming. It was NOT hypo-related, as I managed to test him in a twitching lull, and he was in the 200's somewhere.

So, isn't this a little too fast for the neuropathy to progress? I mean, he's not WELL controlled, but his numbers aren't steadily in the 400s either. But now he wobbles when he walks, tends to flop down a lot, can't even jump up on my table, and can't even use the stairs to get up on my bed. Sometimes when he lays down, he starts in a "meatloaf" position, then his legs start to spread out from under him into a "W" shape. It's so sad.

A holistic supply place near me just gave me a bunch of supplements to start him on in addition to the Zobaline, but Edgar is having none of it so far. Brat.

I have made an appointment for a recheck with the neurologist for this Friday (he was literally JUST seen), but the neurologist I was emailing with seems to think it's all diabetes related. Is it possible for it to progress this rapidly? What do I do? It's heartbreaking. I miss snuggling with him in bed, too. He was ALWAYS a bed kitty...and now he just hangs out UNDER the bed all the time, cuz he can't climb on top. So sad. :(

Do you have any blood analysis results? Low potassium can cause such problems and is is not unexpected n cats with kidney deficiency.

Hm. I don't. I will put a call into the vet's office tomorrow. My regular vet is on vacay for the first half of the week, but I"m sure the fill-in can scan/email me results, or I can stop by and get a copy.

For seizures, I would take him in asap. If there are mineral/electrolyte deficiencies, they can be fatal.

If he didn't already have a history of seizures, I would definitely take him in right away. But he's been having them for a couple years now. It's just that the recent ones seem to have created some residual effects. Although his neurologist already thinks it's probably diabetes related. He had a full neurological workup about 2 weeks ago and then like a month before that. I do have an appointment for him for Friday, which was the earliest I could get.

When I started Mitz on Zobaline, it took 3 or 4 weeks to see any dramatic improvement so it might just take time, if it's really neuropathy. Poor Edgar. Hope your vet can give you some answers.

Well he's been on it a month, and unfortunately he's gotten worse. ;( Local holistic pet store gave me a TON of supplements to start him on and several are specifically for the neuropathy.
