Linus is going in for a dental this morning. I wasn't given any pre-op instructions by the clinic, but I went with what I know, which is no food after 8pm. Does that still hold true for diabetics?

So, what should this morning's dose be on an empty stomach, and assuming he will not be able to eat for most of the day? He has lots of room to go lower, so I'm not too worried about sending him into hypo, but still wondering. I do want him to have the best realistic numbers possible at the vet so she is confident in my ability to handle this and make decisions for him.

Leaving in about half an hour, can't call the vet because they want you there when they open at 8:00. And even if I did, I don't think they would have me do anything different. If nothing else, I'll hold and take his insulin up with me and ask before he gets any.

Vets usually have their own suggestions based on their experience. Part of it depends when the dental will be done. Some do the dental in the morning ans some do it starting about noon. For diabetics my vet says 1/2 food and 1/2 insulin in the morning if BG is in its normal range.

My vet had me give 1/2 dose and no food. Seemed to work OK.

Watch out for hypothermia - anesthesia can chill them quickly.
