Hello! I am new to this board. My girl Athena Aphrodite was diagnosed with Diabetes back in October. I got the Alphatrax 2 monitor and strips and try to test her at least every other day to make sure she is on track. she seems to do really well and stay in range for many days/ weeks then will spike for a day or 2. Currently, she is on 2.5 units of Lantus 2 times daily.
My question is: does anyone know if there are any human glucose meters or any comparable meters that work for cats? The cost of the strips is getting to be quite up there. I tried a different pet monitor but did not feel confident in the readings. If there is any advice on savings, meters, anything, it is very appreciated.

Most of us that live in the US use the Relion Confirm or Micro from WalMart. They take the tiniest sample size and the strips are more affordable than the AlphaTrak ($35.88/100)

All our protocols were written with human meters in mind too, so we're very used to them.

The main difference between them is the pet meters will register higher than a human meter, but as long as you understand what you're looking for, they're totally safe to use.

On a human meter, your "time to act" is when they drop below 50
On a pet meter, it's when they drop below 68.

The goal of home testing is to watch for "trends" more than individual numbers.....and of course to keep kitty safe!! The question we ask ourselves is "Is the current dose getting them where we want them without dropping too low?"
