Question increasing dose

Hi all,
I started last Saturday night and it's actually going pretty well! He got a lot of energy. Plays and runs again, has already fallen off the couch a few times in his enthusiasm....

But the last few days I noticed that he is very focused on food. I feed him 4 times a day (every 6 hours) and after an hour he is staring sadly at his bowl again.

I have been giving him 0.5u. I am doing a curve today.

Should I increase the dose to 1u?

Tommie isn't regulated yet. Until he's routinely spending more time in lower blood glucose (BG) numbers, it's likely he's going to be ravenous. Insulin is what transports glucose out of the blood and into the cells. If his BG is high, the glucose is floating around in his blood stream so he's hungry. It's why an undiagnosed diabetic loses weight.

I would increase the dose. However, I would increase by 0.25u. We tend to change doses in small increments otherwise you risk flying past what could be an effective dose.

Thank you! That is going to be some fine measuring, but I’ll do my best. Should I keep on that dose for at least 5 days again?

Maybe I’m a bit sensitive about his hungry behaviour because this is the first day I’m home all day with him. And he is laying there next to his feeding machine like an addict XD
He’s purring in my lap now. So he isn't all bad

Hi. I’m happy to hear that he already is feeling better. That’s wonderful! From your curve, he definitely needs an increase to .75 units. Do you have syringes with half unit markings? You will have to eyeball it between the .5 mark and the full unit mark.

Oh, and according to the Start Low Go Slow dosing protocol, you will hold the dose for 7 days (14 cycles.)
Fantastic job testing!

You can also feed him more frequently. Feeding at +2 is good. And +4. Feeding after nadir can shorten the duration of the action of the insulin and cause BG to rise prematurely in the cycle, but feeding small snacks of low carb wet food during the first 5 or so hours of the cycle can really help stabilize BG and prevent steep drops.
