Question for those also dealing with kidney disease

Though I would ask the most knowledgeable people out there.

For those of you with kidney cats, do you know anything about supplements or what is good to use?

I am waiting for Trips labs to arrive so I can post. On the phone the Dr said her SDMA is elevated but not by much. End of May it was 13 (0-14 on idexx scale). My vet does not use idexx. He uses Antech and he said the value was 19 on July 9th. I do not know what antech range is yet.

I asked if we should be doing anything about it. He said they have had success with using Rx Renal from Rx vitamins and Azodyl.

Does anyone have insight if these or something else would help?

There is a great ckd forum on Facebook called Cats with Chronic Renal Failure. The only supplements I've given my ckd cats are extra b vitamins. They tend to have issues with anemia and that helps. My cat Zimmy also needed a bit of iron for a time, and probiotics help.

And make sure the food you are feeding is low carb and low phosphorus. Weruva had a lot of good choices.

I think diet is the main thing to focus on when dealing with CKD getting a low carb low phosphorus diet ( not renal diets those are usually high in carbs)

I have used Azodil and I would say it is kind of a gamble, there are cats for whom it actually do helps them deal with some byproducts that the kidneys do not process very well and helps lowering their creatinine values (Babu is one of them) and some say even lowers blood glucose levels ( I have no actual evidence on this one since Babu has been on remission) but I had a cat for whom It did nothing, I actually did not noticed any real change when taking it, and is a big pill which is not so easy to give so I stopped giving it to her and I do have one of my cyvies that her stomach just does not tolerate it and ends up vomiting it so I would say you may try and see how he responds

I would consider omegas and also B complex and extra B12 (it has to be methylcolbalamine)
 
I don't know if it was the Azodyl that helped, but J.D. was on it for his last couple of years and he stayed in stage 2.
