Question for Accuchek Aviva users

I've pretty much been using my Aviva meter since Snickers was diagnosed six years ago. At the end of February I bought some test strips on eBay, and didn't notice that one of the vials had an expiration date of 2/28/2011. Rather than pitch the vial of strips, I changed the date on my meter, pre-dating it back to January, and was able to use the whole vial of strips. It seemed to work fine, but I wondered if anyone else has tried this, and possibly done a comparison with another meter. Looking back, I should have tried another unexpired vial for comparison, but I didn't think of it at the time.

If it's okay to change the meter date, this might be a way to get cheaper strips--lately I've been seeing a lot of Aviva strips on eBay that go pretty cheaply if it's close to the expiration.

I never tried that but will do that tonight. I'll check it against the other meter I use and see if the numbers are similar.

I never thought to move the date back.

Oh that's just too clever. Will keep that in mind, but I hate messing up my meter. Ah, but I have a back-up one.

The thing I worry most about is ordering strips and having them shipped in too cold or too hot of weather. The safe range is above 36 degrees and it's been pretty cold around here lately. I just received a shipment yesterday.

Anyone used strips they know got below freezing? Did they seem out of whack?

That is brilliant. It never occurred to me to set the date back. I have two vials set to expire in June (Bandit only go through 2 or 3 strips a week now), and now I might be able to use them up.

either changing date (sometimes works, sometimes not but I have used a more recent code thingy you put in and even though code does not match, it also works. I have tested with correct code and good strips and update code and expired strip with codes not matching and numbers were no different. well, the usual variances when you test back to back by a few points

I just wanted to say I am glad to see so many people like the Accucheck Aviva meter, I just bought one this morning to replace my 2 defunct freestyle lite meters!

I think you'll find the Accu Check Aviva is really easy to use. I think the test strips sip better than most out there and I rarely ever got an error code for not getting enough blood. I hope you like it.

I've tried other meters, but usually end up coming back to the Aviva. Just don't let eBay sellers know about changing the date on the meter, or there won't be any cheap strips anymore :)

I originally got one because I have a hypoglycemic friend who had one who was throwing away strips because she was only testing once or twice a week, but her insurance would send her 6 boxes at once. So I gladly offered to take the extras off her hands. I found I liked the Aviva better than my Relion micro.

Things I learned with mine:

1. Do not store it anywhere near an electrical appliance. I kept mine on a shelf on the other side of the wall where my fridge was, and I had to get it replaced because it somehow messed the meter up (they replaced it for free, though).

2. If you have problems with strips or your meter and need them replaced by Accuchek, tell them that you're using the meter on yourself, not your cat. They are so helpful and accommodating when you say it's for yourself, but if you say you're using it for your cat you're out of luck.

I'm a huge fan of this meter. I've tried two other ones that just don't compare. I've checked my aviva against my vet's and it was only a 25 point difference (my reading being higher since it's for humans).
I will say the side sipping strips are the worst though!
Great idea about setting the date back on the meter.

I just had my accuchek aviva checked against my vet's alpha track yesterday ---only a 20 point difference on a 400 bg.

I have found the meter to be very easy to use.

I really like our Accucheck and hadn't thought of turning the date back, very clever! I use to do that on the computer to trick some software programs :)

When we checked the meter against the vet's - us 54, them 61 - and that was the last time they had us come in for a test :)

I store my tub of cat medical supplies on top of my refridgerator for long periods of time and never noticed any issues, what happened to your meter Julia?

I like the Aviva, too, and considered setting the date back to use strips that had just expired but didn't try it.

I've noticed recently that people are paying more than retail for the strips on Ebay, I don't know why they're doing that but they're running the prices way up! You can get them reasonably at HealthWareHouse.com - about half of what you'd pay in the store, but they're sometimes bringing more than that on Ebay.
