I have a question. Wenchie tested 71 tonight and obviously no insulin. This morning she tested at 334 and I shot 1/4 unit of Lantus this morning....

Spoke with my vet today and she wants me to start her on 1/2 unit twice a day, obviously depending on her BG. Next Friday, my Vet wants to do another curve after being on 1/2 unit.

Here's my concern: if she was so low tonight after a 1/4 unit this morning, should I listen to my vet and raise her to a 1/2 unit? I could see that she was a bit lethargic/tired today and I immediately thought her BG was low. My gut is telling me 1/4 unit might be enough.

I'm so new to this I'm thinking what do I know?

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

Listen to your gut....always

Agreed Chris. Although I do like our vet, I honestly do not think she is very well-versed on FD. For instance, she wants me to shoot if she is at least 100 - 80 to 120 is normal range. This is her advice after discussing with the other vets in the practice! Obviously, I never listened. If she’s above 120, yes. Below, no way!

Thank you!!!

Eventually, you will shoot lower numbers than 120, but not until you have lots of data and experience and truly understand how your cat responds to both food and insulin.

Lantus works best when it isn't trying to pull down high numbers. I eventually got to the point where I'd shoot China if she was 50 or above. (take a look at her spreadsheets) Since you're using the AT, you may get to the point of shooting over 68 too...eventually!

Looks like you'll have to do the Start Low, Go Slow dosing method, so in that case, it's no shot under 90 (eventually)

Yeah I agree that 1/2 U would be too much too. It’s only been a couple of days since the reduction after having a higher dose, so that higher dose may well still be influencing her too. Definitely don’t go jumping up to a higher dose. But I feel like trying the 1/4U again in the morning could still be done if she’s high enough and if you’re around to monitor her.

and like Chris says, your noshoot number will drop in time with experience and data. I will currently shoot Jazz without hesitation at anything over 60, and actually probably would still shoot at 51 even, but I would likely hesitate and monitor her if it was that low! Haha.

I have to trust my gut on this one and, as Chris said, doing the Start Low, Go Slow method until there is enough data to make any changes. Wenchie is counting on us to do right by her and I will! Thank you!
