last night I had a potential hypo scare as BooBoo's #'s drop fast after her PM shot last night. I changed her to wet diet yesterday, so that mixed with 2u of Humulin was a little too much. Should I give 1 1/2 this morning? Or 1? Need to give the shot already, but concerned and would like some feedback 1st, if possible... Thanx in advance. :)

Since you are going to get Lantus this weekend, and it is a much safer insulin, I would just play it safe till then. I would shoot .5 or one unit and get those tests in at +3 on.

I believe when you asked about food last night, it was suggested to start wet and to cut insulin down to 1 u
I would start your lantus when you get it at .5u BID and test and that dose should be held for 5 days as a rule but depends on cats response.
edited to add. you do not have to wait to feed when on lantus. you can test shoot and feed right away

Also once you get on Lantus you are going to want to get a few +6 or +7 readings as with Lantus you won't be basing your dose increases or decreases from your preshot numbers but off the Nadir (the lowest point). As it works differently than the Humulin N.

Just checked at +3, and #'s still high. I'm thinking if I check her again in 2 hours and she is still high even after a wet food lunch, do i need to go to 1 1/2 perhaps tonight? Gonna go have lunch and give BooBoo lunch and will be back in 2 hours...

Unless she is really high, I personally would not be changing this insulin around. you should be receiving your lantus soon. just stick with the 1 u for now. increasing is just gonna bounce her around more and make the drops harder on her. But wait for others to weigh in on this. this is my opinion only and what I would do

I agree with Dian. Think of this time as a stop-gap. You are just keeping her safe until the food change settles in and until you get the Lantus. Stick with 1 unit.

Better high for a day than low for a minute!

The lantus should be here around 3pm on sat is what the tracking page said. Should I continue on the 1U of Humulin til then even if she is having #'s in the 200's?

Usually the rule of thumb around here for newbies is no shoot if you are below 200 at preshot number. So if you are seeing numbers in the high 200s I would go ahead and give her a "token" dose of .5 or even 1u if you are going to be around and awake to test her again in a few hours. Anything below 200 I would hold off as hard and fast as she drops on N. But that is just my two cents worth. I'm kind of a chicken when it comes to insulin like N...rather see her a couple days too high, especially with Lantus on the way, than letting her go too low and risk a hypo.

It does look like her change in diet is starting to bring her down nicely. :-D

200-300 are not awful numbers. 400-500 are awful numbers. You are working with 2 variables that aren't predictable - a harsh insulin and a food change.

My gut says stay with one unless you hit the high 300-400s. Let's see what others say. You might start a new topic and ask for dose advice.

+6 and at 324. Haven't seen a good # all day and she is drinking more water today. I just can't help feeling like I should give her 1 1/2 tonight. Lantus won't be here til Sat around 3pm too, which means I'll prob have to start on Sunday right? please advise, I am confused and not liking the #'s...
