? Question about when to feed in relation to giving insulin

Quick question and I apologize if this is readily apparent and I have been doing it wrong! When we first started Grady on Lantus, the vet said to feed him 30 min before giving him his shot, which we have been doing. But I am wondering if I am getting his AMPS and PMPS numbers at the correct time? I have been doing it 30 minutes after he eats and right before the shot. If I am not doing this right, please let me know.

With the older insulins like Vetsulin that hit "hard and fast" it was important that they have food on board before the shot

With Lantus, we Test/Feed/Shoot....all within about 5-10 minutes....You Test to make sure they're high enough for insulin, Feed to make sure they're at least willing to eat and Shoot....most of us shoot while our kitties faces are in the food bowl!!

You don't want them to eat for the 2 hours before shot times so that when you test, you get a number that's not influenced by food.

Lantus is a gentle insulin that doesn't start to "kick in" for 2-3 hours, so it's not important if they eat a certain amount before giving .....as long as they're not sick and they're willing to eat, you have several hours to let them eat

You also don't need to feed all of his food at once. You can spread his meals out more or let him graze if he's a grazer. Try not to feed him for the two hours before the preshot test, or that test could be influenced by the food. And it's better to feed most of the food in the first half of the cycle before nadir, when the insulin is stronger.
