Hi there-
I've been reading posts and wanted to get some clarification. We have been testing Fur Ball, shooting and then feeding. However one of the posts said you should test, feed then shoot. Would someone let me know what's best and why?

thanks, Karen

Almost all of us test, feed and shoot. We always gave the shot while Oliver's nose was deep in his breakfast or dinner.

The only time it is important to feed before giving the insulin is if you were using one of the harsher insulins. You would want to be sure he is going to eat and not throw up, because you wouldn't want insulin on an empty stomach. You're using Lantus, right? So for you, it doesn't matter.

If the cat vomits enough later in the cycle and reduces the overall glucose levels, it may affect glucose control severely. It was a problem I had with Spitzer - I never knew if he'd keep his meal down or not and the dose that would be perfect if he ate and did not vomit later was too high if he had an IBD- or pancreatis- associated vomiting episode. It happened so often those last months it was a nightmare trying to control his glucose.

In an otherwise healthy cat, ie no comorbidities, test, feed, and shoot works well.
