Question about vomiting and BG

So, I know vomiting can cause BG to go down if no sugar/carbs are absorbed before insulin kicks in but . . . does it ever cause it to go up? Is there any correlation with high (like 600) BG being the CAUSE of vomiting? Or, likewise, if it goes too low has anyone seen a cat vomit from hypo numbers? NOT the other way around. Sometimes if he hits the 100's, then vomits hours later his BG tends to be really high by end of cycle. Honestly, every time we come home to vomit I think great, he's gone low! Get the hypo kit . . . but we test and his BG is normal/high. Can this be a response to extreme swings?

Yes, he has had a sensitive tummy for years . . . probably IBD/TRIADITIS etc. And yes, his vomits tend to be hairball related even though food is involved 50% of the time . . . . . but it almost seems like his BG has been improving, his ketones are fine, he's gaining weight! His drinking/peeing is steady and better than before but now he's vomiting multiple times a week again! I really hope this is all due to his chronic constipation. I've said it before and I'll say it again - the Royal Canin Fiber Response dry food was amazing and although I understand the importance of wet/low carb food I really regret we can not keep him on that. Miralax does not compare to how regulated he was on that food. Vomiting was almost completely gone!

Sorry for the rant. I just feel like he can't catch a break . . . I hate seeing him miserable.:(

I don’t know if BG low or high can cause vomiting but I know for certain that vomiting can cause high BG. Spot often sits in higher numbers on days he’s feeling crappy. Though like you said, vomiting can also cause low BG if they don’t keep enough food onboard.... it’s a challenging conundrum!
Has he ever been tested for pancreatitis? Does he take anything for the vomiting?

No definitive tests for pancreatitis yet. He was treated for chronic constipation for a year. Then we found some high liver levels and treated with Denamarin which helped but we made the mistake of trying steroids and wham! Diabetes!

Is it possible he's had pancreatitis all along? Sure. He will be seeing his regular vet for a preliminary GI panel next week. Anything out of range and we will follow up with his IM specialist.

How much and how often do you dose with Miralax? Bama has been tossing hairballs pretty regularly lately since he converted to all wet diet. I've noticed his numbers tend to be lower after he's thrown up. There's generally a good bit of partially digested food along with a small clump of hair. I have a question pending here titled "Hairballs increasing" but haven't received much response. Thanks for any insight you can offer.

We started at 1/8 teaspoon 1x a day, then 2x ideally - but more often he gets 1/4 teaspoon at night cause mornings are so hectic already. At one point he was up to 1/4 2x a day. If his stools seem loose or almost diarrhea, I cut the dose, or skip it, or sometimes wait until morning so its like 36 hours between doses. This only works for him because 50% of his vomiting is from chronic constipation - not just hairballs. I spoke with the IM specialist about Miralax versus trying some pumpkin and she felt this would be better because 1) we know he responds well to it and 2) miralax doesn't affect the BG. I have found that the miralax only works when given a certain way - this may seem odd but you can't or atleast Tigger does not get any benefit from the dry powder mixed into his wet food. I have to mix it with a few ml of water. Then I can mix it into his food - the extra water always helps too . . . but sometimes he KNOWS and is a stubborn bastard about eating the food :joyful: Most of the time I fill a 3 or 5 ml (feeding) syringe with the solution and pop it in the side of his mouth.
