Good morning everyone,

Since Enana became diabetic I have only bought one Lantus vial. I am looking for prices on vials and pens.

Would you share with me what you like about one or the other? I'm hesitant in which to buy.

Thanks.

I know that the pens cost more up front then the vial, but when you break it down into how much you will waste out of a vial versus how much waste (if any) out of a pen, it is more economical to buy the pens .. Mocha would get roughly 25-28 days of good numbers on a pen before they would creep up, but a lot of people here use the pens right to the last drop ...

Hi, I cannot compare/contrast successfully because I have never used the vial. I have only used the pen & I love the pens.
Is it because that is what I know & am used to? Probably a lot to do with it (change is uncomfortable  )
Anyway.. most hospital outpatient phamacies will sell a pen at a time since they use them in higher volume & it runs me nearly $50.00 with tax. It is cheaper to by 5 at once, but some people do not have all the $$ at once. I only use my pen for 30 days, but I am very agressive & don't want to leave anything to chance, others use their pens for 2-3 months if not more.
Good luck.. I am sure there are pros/cons to both!

The manufacturer says that lantus lasts for 28 at room temperature once the container has been opened ( the first shot.) Since we keep ours in the fridge it should last longer, but the clock starts ticking as soon as you draw a dose.

The vial has 10ml and should last at least 28 days unless you are on a high dose. If it goes bad you have to throw the remainder away.

The pens are more expensive initially. They come in a pack of 5, each containing 3ml., so you are getting one and a half times as much insulin, 15ml. That is part of the price difference, the other is the extra packaging. However, each pen has it's own 28 day countdown, so that is 140 days minimum use that you will get out of a pack of 5 pens and it could be longer. So in the long run it is more economical to buy the pens. Some pharmacists insist that you cannot use a syringe w/ the pen but it is not true. Look at the pix in this sticky http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=151 Print it out if they don't believe it is possible.

We still use syringes to draw the insulin and give the shots. We treat the pens like mini vials. Don't get the needles that are meant to be used w/ the pens. If you use them to shoot directly from the pen you can only give full units, the pens cannot be set to .5 or .25 units.

Some hospital pharmacies or university medical centers may be willing to sell single pens. You will also need a different Rx from you vet to get the pens instead of the vials.

thanks for posting this natalie - we're going to need new insulin here before long and i've been wondering the same thing. we're a couple of days past 28 but there are no floaties or discoloration in the vial yet, and at $111 i'm going to keep using it til i see some sign that it's not good still.

wow thats a great buy at sams club they are 213 at my local sams. I just ordered from http://www.canadadrugsonline.com/HowToOrder.aspx here this past time it was 138.00 for 5 pens this is with shipping it arrived last week still cold in a insulated cooler. I was buying my pens from walgreens for 215 before and I had called sams to get a price before ordering from canada so I am surprised my sams is so much more then someone else but I guess all stores are different. I used the vial in Do Lous early months but I ended up throwing so much away

I had bought the pens from Canada...I called my vet for the prescription but she is on vacation and the vet that is there doesn't want to give me the prescription for the pens! cat(2)_steam cat(2)_steam

Glad you were able to order! FYI for others... I had the Costco pharmacist offer to sell me one pen at a time... $205 for 5 or $41 each.

If you have a AAA card, there is a discount as well at several pharmacies.... I'll have to try it on my next refill!!
