So, Question: those of you who have had dental work (canine tooth extraction) done on the cat.... was it a huge deal? what was the recovery like? i need to decide if I pop her in to have it done before I leave for holidays. I leave on the evening of the 8th of January. After that, for 2 weeks, she will be visited at least twice a day by my son, but not have anyone living here.

What would you do?

Post-procedure monitoring is important. If she develops an infection and you're not there, she could get very sick, very quickly. A diabetic is particularly prone to infection which raises glucose and if she doesn't eat due to mouth pain, she's set up for DKA.

What about seeing if you can get a house sitter to actually stay at your place? Aif not, I'd postpone.

I would postpone. My cat recently had a dental with several extractions including 2 of his canines. He did not bounce right back. He would seem to improve but then would regress, it was not progressive. I took him back to be looked at on day 5 post recovery as every time I'd think he finally turned the corner there would be some other sign that he was not yet himself. He was off to himself, sleeping, meatloafing, did not resume eating normally for some time...I had to warm and coax and try many tricks to get any food in him. He was on bupe bid at least 8 days past surgery. The wicked antibiotics he was on left him with terrible GI upset for well over a week past when we stopped them. He continued to be still and quiet and did not fully get his personality back for awhile. After the first 5 or 6 days I wasn't as worried anymore, and felt he would be okay...but just realized it was a big procedure and had taken a lot out of him and he would need more time to recover. It was nearly 3 weeks before he was really himself.

I will also say though if her canines need to come out she is probably in pain (or at lease discomfort) now. So it may help for her to have some pain meds in the interim. We did that.
It may be your kitty recovers more quickly, but the potential is that she may need more time and care and you will want to be there. Good luck wit it whenever you decide.

Thanks everyone. I am going to postpone. She is not really suffering much with the tooth, eats well. Better to wait till I can be home to watch her. I appreciate all the feedback.
