Question about timed feeders? Petsafe 5

I got my petsafe yesterday and I tested it out last night. It was set to give Diggy a meal around 1am. As soon as I put the food in there, he was scratching at it and trying to get in. I noticed that it wasn't aligned right, so I pushed it back into place. That's when I realized that all it takes is a bit of pressure and you can rotate the disc to whatever compartment you want, meaning Diggy could do that if he was really determined. Lo and behold, I come down in the morning and there are a few pieces of food left over in the compartment just past the visible one, meaning he rotated it one over, had his meal, and then at 1am it rotated itself and hid the food again. For those of you who have this same feeder, have you encountered this same problem?

And also, can you put in canned food? Last night I threw in a little bit of dry food just because it was the first time and it was getting late. But especially with it being summer, can canned food last that long out in the open?

It's important to make sure it's "seated" before you load it up

You can use canned...some models have a space in the bottom where you can fit a small ice pack or you can add an ice cube to the cells with food in them or make "cat-sicles" by added some water to canned food and freezing it in ice cube trays....pop them out and they're an easy way to offer "fresh" meals later in the day

When I get home from work I'll have to make sure it's on right. I didn't have time last night to do more than throw in some food and go to bed.

I didn't even think of freezing the food, I'll definitely have to try that tonight as well, thanks. Now hopefully Diggy will stop being such a troublemaker and just wait for it to dispense the food instead of trying to break in!

I have the two compartment feeder. My avatar is a picture of Smokey trying to get it open early. He does it every night. He starts trying an hour early now. So far he has not succeeded.
