For BG testing I'm using Relion Prime, a human meter. I know there are differences between pet and human meters. My question is, does anyone know the differences in numbers between the two? If Max is, say, 225 on a human meter, what would that be on a pet meter? Higher or lower? Thanks.

Pet meters read higher. There is no exact conversion though. They say that at higher numbers the difference is greater than at lower numbers.

On a pet meter, the reading would be higher but by how much is unknown. Pet meters generally read higher. At low range numbers the difference is small and sometimes even negligible and gets progressively larger as the BG level increases. There is no point difference, percent difference or other mathematical conversion between a human and pet meter. To further compound the mystery, no meter is exact and all have variance allowances.

You would be shocked to learn just how far off meters are legally allowed to read. Most are fairly accurate at the lower numbers which is the real danger.

I'm using the Relion Prime, too, and what everyone else has said is accurate. You'll never get an accurate number but you can use it to determine patterns. I was considering buying the AlphaTrak2 which is on sale now on ADW Diabetes for $107 with the test kit and 125 strips, but then I'm concerned about the strips being so expensive after that. Are there cheaper strips that work with the AlphaTrak2?

There are other strips that will work in the AT2 meter however if you want the most accurate results possible the only way to do so is to use the AT2 branded strips with the correct cat code. When you use the alternate strips, you have no idea what code on the AT2 meter will give the most accurate results and I have seen times when the alternate strips read higher than the AT2 strips which could give you a false sense of security and be dangerous at low BG levels. Some folks keep the AT2 meter as a backup and for double checks in the event of unexpected readings but use their human meter on a daily regular basis.
