I am interested in learning how to home test for sugar and protein in the urine at home.

My cat is just starting lantus and has been on about 12 days now.

can you take urine that is on newspaper in the box and test if there is no cat litter in the box or how do you get urine to do the tests.

My kitty is using paper shredding and not litter due to asthma so I wondered if there was an easy way to get the urine for the tests.

Anyone who can give me advice will be very appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to FDMB, Molly

Try acquarium gravel (rinse and dry first to remove any dust).

There are additional tips in my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools.

The gold standard is blood glucose monitoring using an inexpensive human glucometer, matching test strips, and 26-28 gauge lancets to slightly prick the ear for a blood droplet. It takes some practice, but by rewarding the cat with a low carb treat when you try, most cats barely put up a fuss.

I gather a urine sample from Katie in this way-
I use a ladle and slide it under her bottom after she starts to urinate, get a little bit, and slide it back out. Easy peasy. She tends to go right after eating so I just keep an eye out.
But I do it so much, I think she is really tired of me doing it and I can just see it in her eyes, she's thinking- "Here she is, coming with that %$#@ ladle again!"

Anyway, that is what works for me.

thanks everyone. I did some reading on how they are not very accurate compared to the blood tests, so unless the vet tells me to do the urine samples I will stick to the blood monitoring. Thanks for the tips much appreciated.

The urine testing is primarily to monitor for ketones. Ketones form as a by-product of fat breakdown for calories. Too many ketones may indicate diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially fatal, expensive to treat (hospitalization required) complication of diabetes.

There are blood ketone monitors, however the test strips are quite pricey.
