Paragraph 6 reads Use non clumping litter. Its not so accurate but gives you a general guide - Take a spoonful of clean litter and mix well with the same amount of water. Test. If its negative then repeat using a spoonful of peed on litter. Double the results since the water is diluting the urine.

In the repeat test is the formula 1 spoon of peed on liter + 1 spoon of water? How do you double color coded results? Beige X 2 is still Beige. If the litter was peed on why would you need to add water?

Go for fresh catch specimen in the foil or crystal litter or a litterbox like the Breeze.

For the most accurate results, the urine needs to be within about 15 minutes of delivery, into a clean resevoir (bottom tray, foil pan, plastic over the litter, a big spoon, whatever.

I dont know where you got that information from but it is simply not true. The ketones are not going to start to disappear in that time frame.

ketones may not disappear, but the instructions for using ketostix can vary from one manufacturer to another. for instance, i've used ketostix with instructions to use a fresh sample and i've used ketostix with instructions to use the stix within 30 minutes for an accurate result. i've also used ketostix with instructions that haven't mentioned any time limit in regard to obtaining an accurate result.

my suggestion? read the package insert and follow the instructions for the brand you're using! :-D

If you read carefully, you will note that I NEVER said anything about ketones disappearing.

And here are the instructions for KetoDiaStix:
"Directions
- Collect fresh urine specimen in a clean, dry container
- Remove one strip from bottle and replace cap.
- Dip test area of strip in urine and remove immediately. (alternatively, wet the test area by passing strip through urine stream.) - Tap edge of strip against container or clean, dry surface to remove excess urine.
- Compare test area to Colour Chart exactly 15 seconds after wetting. Ignore colour changes that occur after 15 seconds "

Those are the exact same instructions on the Relion test strips I got.

Having 4 cats and 4 litter boxes and a diabetic cat tends to run when I come near him, fresh urine collection is a bit of a challenge. One of the many issues Hairy had when I rescued him is that he would not use a litter box. It took me months to get him to use a litter box regularly and he is still quite particular. Disrupting his litter box habits could cause a substantial long term problem, which is why the method in paragraph 6 of the previously cited document would be the best choice in my case, but the instructions don't make sense. Can I just dip the test strip into the litter right after he pees?

There are a couple of tips in my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools that you might find useful.
