Hi all,

It's been along time since I've posted. My OTJ cat, Guinness (whose been honeymooning for over a year now) has been doing really well. I take his readings once every couple of months now and his activity is seemingly normal. My question is, it's been a long time (2 months) since I've taken a reading and today he broke into a loaf of bread (he's constantly hungry) and ate at least 1/2 of slice. I took his reading about 2.5 hours later and he was a 222 (he usually is a 70 or so around the same time, right before his evening meal). Here are my questions...

Is it possible the bread would have spiked his BG so high?
He's due for a teeth cleaning and could have a bad tooth, could that be the reason for the BG?
If the tooth is the issue, and I take him in and get it taken care of, will his BG go back to normal or is the honeymoon over?

I plan to retest him tomorrow at the same time (right before his evening meal) and see where he's at. He's been acting normal, not drinking excessively (he never drinks out of his water bowl anymore) or peeing excessively. Anything else I should be looking out for. I'm dreading a relapse (I don't think I can emotionally handle it again).

Thanks for your thoughts and Happy New Year!

I'd say yes to both possibilities. If it was the bread, you will see lower levels tomorrow. If the tooth, you may not see lower levels until a dental.

And if it is diabetes again, you can handle it! You did it once when you were new and completely overwhelmed. Now you know the routine.

Yes to both.

Once a diabetic, always a diabetic - even when OTJ. And that means a sudden influx of carbs or illness or stress or bad teeth can spike the BGs. Just keep an eye on him.

And why, oh why, do the sugarkitties always steal the bread? When my Astrophe had temporarily high BGs from steroids, she stole and ate a huge chunk of fruitcake! Silly kitties ....

Thank you for your replies! Guinness has always been obsessed with food and since being diagnoised diabetic, he's been a rabid carb addict. It's been especially challenging this Christmas with a 5 year old child and a carb-addicted cat. The gingerbread house had to be stored in a plastic storage bin, not left out on the table as a Christmas decoration. Every Christmas cookie crumb had to be accounted for. He broke into cookies, chex mix and the bread (on different days). He sits and waits for visitors to drop even the tiniest morsel and he's right on it. I try and vaccuum every day just to keep him from getting things. My microwave and oven stand in as bread boxes, but sometimes things get left out by mistake (hence the bread attack yesterday). I plan to test him before his evening meal ( in about 1/2 an hour) so hopefully, it will have dropped. I swear the cat has a death wish.
