Hello, all!

Pinky has been doing great since his previous bout of nausea and anorexia. He's been eating more than enough, drinking, is active and playful again, his BG is staying normal, and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. I have an appointment to get him officially diagnosed for what is likely pancreatitis next week with a vet that is far more reasonably priced than the numbers I had been quoted.

I do have one thing that I want to ask about; the vet I was taking him to gave me Hill's Prescription Diet Urgent Card a/d to try to encourage him to eat; it's medium carb at 13% (which I don't love), but his BG has stayed steady in the 80s the entire time he has been eating it. He loves it. I mean, he loves it. I haven't seen him devour food like this since this all started, and he seems to be acting much better on it than any other food we have tried. I tried introducing him initially to other foods (other low-carb wet foods from the store as well as his old food), and he turned his nose up at all of them. As soon as I placed the a/d in front of him, he ate it all happily and licked his bowl clean. Clearly, he loves this stuff. And since it isn't making his blood sugar change, I don't mind that it's a little higher in carbs than the stuff he had been getting.

However, I was doing a little more research on this food, and I saw on the Hill's website that they do not recommend this diet for more than 6 months. I called to get details, and they said because the fat percentage is too high, and that they recommend more carbs (!!!!). The fat content is actually lower than the food he had been getting. While I don't love that the protein is a little lower than what he was eating before, his treats are all protein, so I don't mind the slightly lower percentage.

I just wanted to get some alternative thoughts; it was a red flag to me that they think he needs more carbs (even when I indicated he is diabetic) and that the fat is too high at 33%. I want to keep him on this stuff, as he is actually eating it and is improving, and I want to go into the vet with as much information as I can to make my case that I think he needs to be on it. Would it be okay to keep him on this stuff, or should I really try to get him to change again to another food (which has been a nightmare to try and do)? I know the best food is the food that a cat will eat, I just want to do what is best for him in the long run.

I believe the fat content of a/d is 55%, rather than 33%. The 33% is probably protein. Generally, a/d is an urgent care therapeutic diet, so the nutritional balance might not be ideal for long term use. But personally, if he were my cat, I wouldn’t worry about it until I was closer to the 6 month mark. It’s so important to keep him eating.

My boys loved AD and it is mainly organ meat with high moisture......the best food is the one your cat will eat. If he gets bored Gerber 2stage baby food is usually a hit!

Oh! My numbers were per their website, but that might be out of date. https://www.hillspet.com/cat-food/pd-ad-canine-feline-canned

He just loves this stuff so much, and I have had so much trouble getting him to eat anything else. I'm exhausted!
