Hello,
I am getting around the site and find so much helpful information posted here. And then there are the individuals who help with the questions which you must hear over and over and over again! I appreciate y'all so much!

My current question have to do with food. My cat Liz is currently eating Hill's wet and dry m/d. The food charts show wet 46/41/14 and dry 43/44/13.

If the dry actually has 13 carbs and the wet 14 carbs, why take away the dry (which I have been decreasing)?

From my reading I see carbs should be under 10. However, one article I read made mention of one of the dry foods listed at 7 carbs, that when tested was actually 14 carbs. Also, the charts seem dated. Do pet food manufacturers change the mixes?

What about dry food that has 10 carbs or less? Are those discouraged as well?

Thank you!

My Goofus doesn't tolerate wet food at all, vomits every time, even if small amounts are given and
mixed with the dry. I feed Evo cat & kitten, 12% carbs. My vet says that in his experience, switching
a cat that has always had free fed dry, to strictly wet, will make it much more difficult to regulate
because it puts additional stress on the cat. Its important to always have plenty of fresh water
available, the cat will drink what it needs. He also said that the food values of wet food change
as it sits on the shelf, the dry is more stable and therefore maintains it values much better. I believe
the Hills DM dry is actually 18% carbs.

for the bottom line of why wet food over dry..... no matter what the carbs....see what dr. lisa says here.....

I don't agree with Goofus's vet..... I think it's harder to regulate a cat on dry food because it is metabolized differently.
I watched a dear friend here who had a crazy cat that was scared of wet food......
there were nailbiting days watching how to boost her bg when she went low.....
the cat didn't like treats either.... only milk drops....

you might get a diabetic cat to remission on dry food but ultimately you are putting the cat at a much higher risk for
ckd.....
they need all the moisture they can get....

As I stated, it had been my vets experience when treating diabetic cats and his own diabetic cat. Every cat is different. I've read so many posts on here and I'm amazed at how many people have so much trouble getting numbers down and regulating the insulin dose, after even 4-6 months and so much pancreatitis.

True, that they need all the moisture they can get, and as long as they always have water available, they will. I also have another cat that when I tried to slowly change her over to wet food, developed horrible, diarrhea. We fought that for months, all kinds of tests, lots of money, and nothing. Put her back on dry food and she was back to normal within 1 week.

My vet says it's important not to make too many changes all at once, too much stress, which is also dangerous for the diabetic cat. Just another opinion, tho.
