Question about food and litter box habits

My cat was first diabetic about 4 years ago and went into remission after a year. however she still did the whole excessive drinking/peeing thing after that. I'm not sure if it was just out of habit or because i kept her on dry food (i had a terrible vet back then, who didnt tell me anything.) so i was always just used to seeing that behavior, which is probably why i didnt know her diabetes had come back last month.

My new vet said to switch her to canned food and pretty much right after that she stopped with the excessive drinking/peeing. She was only on insulin for about a week before she started to show signs of remission. My vet said cos she was so borderline diabetic already, that the diet change was probably all that she needed.

So now she doesnt seem to be drinking any water at all. Before i was filling up the water dish daily and now its like every 3 to 4 days. i'm not even sure if shes drinking it or if its just evaporating??

So my question is, does she get enough water from just the wet food? i've been adding extra water to it, just in case cos i was worried she wasnt drinking anything.

And also, now that shes drinking less, she only seems to pee like twice a day. Is that normal?? typically going 12 hours without peeing?
 
Sounds like you may very well have a diet controlled diabetic...are you testing her at home so you know what her numbers are?

But since I have switched over all 13 of my cats (two diabetics and 11 non-diabetics) they all only pee a couple times a day and drink virtually no extra water. I also add water to their canned food. Cats are designed to get their water from their food so it is very normal if they are getting enough water from their diet not to drink a whole lot of water. If fact mine all drink so little water now that the only real water dish that gets refilled because it is low it the dog's. :-D I do still keep water down for the cats which I pick up, clean and put out fresh daily, but it is hardly ever touched unless the dog gets into it. :lol:

okay good! she had me worried.

i do test her at home and thank god i did, cos she went really low one day while on insulin, not hypoglycemic, but low enough to get me worried and call the vet! vet advised to take her off the insulin, but still test everyday for a week to see how she responds without and check back in.

after the week, the trend was showing, that although she started out somewhat high in the morning (mid 200s, but thats alot better than the 400s i was getting when she was first diagnosed), she would go down to normal levels within a couple hours after food and stay there throughout the day

i noticed that she was always higher when she hadnt eaten for a while (i.e. overnight) so i switched from feeding her twice a day to spreading it out over 4 times, to keep her levels more constant and not have too many high peaks.

so now, the vet said just to spot test her once a week or so, or anytime she seems to be acting weird. hopefully she stays this way!
 
Bandit doesn't drink from his water dish AT ALL. In fact, if I see him drinking water I usually freak out because it means he got into something and his blood sugar is high (which is the only time he drinks). I also mix a little water in with his food for some meals. It's normal for a cat on a wet only diet to not drink very much at all, because they're getting most of their moisture from their food.
 
Both my non diabetic and diabetic never drink their water anymore...the first time i saw molly (nondiabetic) drink in a LONG time is when she just got over her kitty cold and she hadnt eaten that much the day before.
patches i see now and then take a few sips now and then, and i tend to freak when he does but i have to tell myself he may just be thirsty.
