? Question about fasting prior to ultrasound

Hello all,

Zappa is having another ultrasound tomorrow. Our appointment is at 10am. I know I’m not supposed to feed him in the morning, and I’m supposed to give him half insulin.

My question is this: how many hours does he need to fast? He literally eats all night with his automatic feeder. He is completely miserable if he can’t eat and will vomit bile. I want him to have food as late as possible.

Does he need to fast for 8 or 12 hours?

Thank you!

I would think 8 hours is sufficient. You just dint want food to block them from seeing everything. They don’t sedate him do they?

I’m thinking of feeding him his last meal at 1am. What do you think?
They do give him light sedation but I don’t know what - they did tell me that it’s not regular anesthesia. I’m kicking myself for not asking. His appointment is at 10 but I don’t know what time he will actually have the ultrasound. Also, if his cyst has refilled with fluid, they will have to drain it.

I give him gabapentin when we leave. Unfortunately he is horrible at the vet. He bit the tech last time.

He is never aggressive at home - his aggression started about four years ago, he used to be great at the vet. Oh well.

What part of him is getting scanned? Neko never had to fast for ultrasounds, even the GI ones. Light sedation doesn't need fasting. Neko also used to act up at the vet, unless I was with her. She had a blood draw at the acupuncture vet with me there and she was fine. Blood draws at the general practice vet involved gloves, towels and muzzle, with me outside the room. :arghh:

8 hours fasting should be plenty. Raw food gets processed pretty quickly.
