Hi everyone!

Today my fiance and I went to Petsmart to get my kitty Lil Dude some canned food and we found, and bought, some cans of BLUE Wilderness for cats. On the cans it says it is low carb, high protein food with 95% being the main meat. My questions are do any of you use this cat food for your kitties, and if so, do they do well on it, do they like it, are you happy with the food?

Lil Dude had his first can tonight & ate most of it & seemed very interested in it, so I am optimistic he will enjoy it, but since I don't really know much about these foods, I just wanted some insight on how many of your kitties are eating it & how they do on it.

Oh, and how often should I feed him? I would guess to feed him three times a day, but am not really sure.

TIA!!

I have never tried it, hopefully someone will come along that does.

What you can do, and I did with another brand, is to write the company and ask if they will give you the AS FED values for the food. Some do cooperate and some don't but it never hurts to ask plus in my case they sent me a whole bunch of coupons.

That sounds like a really good idea. I will read on the website some and contact them.

Another thing that geared me toward this food, though there were others that had this, is that it is grain free and that's a must, right?

Thanks!!

I think grain free is good but I'm not sure.

If they do email you back please share it with everyone whether it's good or bad because it will help people decide if that's a good option for their kitty or not.

I emailed about Meow mix market selects and surprisingly that's a wonderful brand low in carbs though unfortunately I lost the email they sent me that showed what the as fed values were so I can't share it with anyone and I switched from it because it's pretty pricey

Sorry I didn't see your answer about how much food to give. It really depends on the cat, it's hard to say how much.

Hi Robin,
I tried two different flavors of the Blue Wilderness with Bob, but he didn't like them so I didn't buy any more. Grain free is good, yes. Unfortunately, the newer flavors aren't on Binky's food charts, and writing to them to find out the as fed values would be a great idea.
You can feed him 2, 3, 4 or more times a day. Some people only feed twice, some feed a half dozen small meals a day. It depends on the cat more than anything. Did lil dude "graze" before diagnosis? Some kitties do, while other we call "hoovers" (like the vaccuum) eat in minutes and clean the bowl. That's what both of mine do. I feed them their "big" meals around 6 am and pm, and then I give them smaller portions in between their big meals.
If possible, avoid feeding a couple hours before your AM and PM pre-shot BG tests. If they eat too close to test time, the BG reading will be artificially inflated due to eating, and you might think he needs more insulin that he really does. The shot time routine should be to test the BG, then give him his food, and then the shot either while, or right after he eats.
When a cat is not regulated yet, he will have a bigger than normal appetite, because his body can't process food normally. So they need to eat more than you would normally think they should. Lil Dude will eat a lot until he starts to improve, then you'll see his appetite go back to "normal".
Some people here used timed feeders so their sugarcats can eat during the day when nobody is home to feed them. Others freeze food and put "food cubes" out that kitty will eat after it thaws. I'm sure others can give you tips on that.

Next time you are in Petsmart, if you haven't already seen them, look for some wonderful freeze dried low carb treats made by Beefeater. They make excellent "after test" treats and come in salmon, chicken and shrimp flavors. Bob loves them.

If something is grain free, and 95% meat, it's going to be ok for a diabetic. Bandit had some of the Blue Wilderness Duck and Turkey flavors a while back, and he liked them and his BG was fine on them, but they were too expensive. It was much cheaper to get grain free EVO 95%, Wellness, or Merricks, which are the same quality. Each of those companies have store-finders on their web sites. You'd be surprised how much cheaper your local pet food store is than PetSmart or PetCo. I pay $1.16 for a 5.5 oz can of Merricks at my locally owned pet store, which has a healthier protein/fat ratio than the 95% foods (the 95/96% foods have less protein and more fat to make a profit). That's only slightly more expensive than what I pay for Fancy Feast at PetSmart or Wegmans.

I'm an avowed label reader, because I had to go through many different types of food that weren't on the list when my other cat had stomach cancer, and because she didn't finish a lot of the cans I would give them to Bandit if they were ok for a diabetic. If you read the label of a cat food can and there are no grains (rice, wheat, corn), soy, or a large amount of starch or vegetables (ingredients are listed in order from greatest amount to lowest--a food can contain potatoes and be perfectly fine to feed a diabetic, but if potatoes are the second ingredient it's probably high in carbs.) Small amounts of vegetables are fine.

I gave Cedric the Wilderness canned at first, but he got to not liking them. Not sure why. Now I feed him Wellness and the Evo for cats & kittens (purple label, he doesn't like the others).

Hoping this link will work... the Blue Wilderness IS an acceptable food (0.5% carbs, as fed), and when I'm not feeding raw, is one of my two staples for Willie because the duck version is low in phosphorus, which is important for cats with renal issues. Our other staple is Merrick BG Turkey. Willie likes the Wilderness MUCH better than the BG, likely because the fat content is higher.

Newer Food Chart

I don't have the user name to attribute this too, and I want to make sure that person gets credit (this should really go into one of the food stickies!!), so if this is yours, please speak up!!
