have never used Bupe but have some coming this week to give my little Bayley while we sort out a broken tooth issue - can anyone give me ANY info on it and it`s use , how it may affect her etcÉ (cant get my question mark to work sorry - for some reason I can`t get my keyboard to speak English today ) haha Anyway - I am looking for anything anyone can tell me!

You squirt it into her mouth, between the cheeks & teeth. It's an opiate, so she'll be "stoned". Some kitties get extra lovey; some don't like it so much. Do you have a dosage or will your vet give you the dosage?

the instructions given for alex were to give 0.10ml buprenorphine (0.3mg/ml) every 12 hours by mouth... into the cheek pouch as it is absorbed by the oral mucosa. you don't want to squirt it down the throat. i think i've seen other dosage amounts here on the board. i can't remember if it's dosed by weight. i'm sure others will chime in.
bupe makes alex very sleepy...

It's one of the very few pain killers for cats. It may come in premeasured syringes and it's absorbed through the gums. The ones I got were .17ml. I think it is dosed by weight. It is a very safe and effective pain killer, but can really sedate a cat. My Belle acted very drugged the whole time on it, but recently she seems to do much better with it. It lasts about 12 hours in Belle, but the instructions say every 6-12 hours as needed. Bottom line, it's one of the very few options for a pain killer in cats, so if Bayley is in pain, it's worth a shot.

should I expect it to mess with her numbers alot - I am away this weekend.... and I want to plan accordingly - my needle give has agreed to learn how to test and I have she and another friend willing to come in and check on her and visit etc. I am only an hour away so I will be available to get home if needed but want to avoid that.... the timing sucks but she has always chosen the most dramatic times to play with her numbers or have a worrisome incident - she wants me to constantly prove my love = haha kidding - she knows she is adored.

Seriously!!! Don't they all?

i don't know if it would mess with the numbers. when a kitty is in pain the numbers usually rise. the bupe kills the pain so pain is no longer a factor in making the numbers rise. i haven't used it enough to know if it would cause any problems while you're away...

The problem I had with it was that Bear was so sedated that he never got out of bed to eat or pee. I suggest starting off with a conservative dose. It is dosed by weight and by duration (a larger dose gives longer duration). Another issue I had was that my vet gave it to me in a compounded flavored syrup that contained sugar, and that did cause a rise in BG. Make very sure you are getting straight Buprenorphine (in the same form as is used for sub Q administration) and not one of the compounded syrups the Ontario vets and pharmacies love to supply. It's flavorless anyway, so I don't know why they would bother to add flavor to it. It will probably come from Chiron pharmacy. Whatever dose they suggest, shave a smidge off until you see how she reacts (is my advice). If you prefer to give it by subQ injection, the vet can preload those for you. It's pricey ($100 plus to buy a whole bottle).

For your keyboard, try closing your browser and reopening it, or restarting your computer.

I have been giving it to Latte 3x/day for the last week via sub q injection. The few times I played with it before I gave half the dose her vet recommended (.15ml...I gave.75ish). For Latte that was way too much. She sat with eyes dilated for more than 8hrs. She wouldnt sleep, and if she got up she appeared skittish/paranoid.

This time around I am giving .03ml. It makes her sleepy and eyes dilated. But she is still able to take care of her needs...eating, drinking, peeing.

I think Linda has a good idea to give a conservative dose to start. Our vet said the side effects wear off the longer they take it. I think I may see that happening in Latte's case.

If you do a google search for bupe and cats you can find how it is dosed and the starting dose that would be best. You can decide from there how much less you may want to give.

Good luck!

Gabby was given bupe after her dental. She was stoned -- she actually let a friend pick her up which never, ever happens. I didn't see any change in her numbers from the drug. The larger the dose, the longer the duration. It can either be given in the cheek pocket or as a sub-q injection. My vet gave me a bottle and needles since I knew how to measure and shoot.

Pippin had it for pain after his foot injury last year and he was out of it....dribbling urine out of it, but he wasnt in pain so thats good, it didnt seem to affect his BG but the injury sure did, that injury began his downward spiral with his BG that we are just now recovering from.
The bupe is a great thing to have for pain though.

I thought the oral was tricky to administer to a cat with a sore mouth and the syringe shot it in, I couldn't seem to release it slowly. But I haven't heard anyone else complain about it being difficult so maybe it was just the syringes they gave me (the doses were pre-measured).

I only used it once for Maui in March after her dental. The dentist told me to keep it in fridge. Why, I don't know, but I followed the instructions. After mentioning it here, I commented on the thickness of it and again, got a question. So, maybe putting it in fridge makes it thicken up and stay in the gum/cheek area longer?

Ask your vet what they think and well, doesn't seem to hurt it if it's fridged or not.
